Treasure Talk | Caregiving Youth Project Newsletter
The Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) helps identify, recognize, educate, and support students who care for chronically ill, injured, elderly, or disabled family members. This allows Caregiving Youth to achieve success, have fun, and make new friends, while promoting academic and personal growth.

A Note from Dr. Connie
Connie Siskowski, RN, PhD, AACY President & Founder
|
This week's Baltimore Sun featured a story by Kris, a high school senior who lives in MD: Click here to read the story. Your stories are like his story! The effects of having a family member who has a significant health condition are the same - here in FL, in MD, and throughout the world! BUT, people don't know and understand that. Together we must let them know! Please email me ( connie@aacy.org) if you would like to take the next step of courage and share your story! We will help you!!

Caregiving Youth Connect
Want to Be More Involved?
|
The AACY and CYP are looking for Caregiving Youth to help us create a group for you and by you. We want to get some of our most involved students and alumni together to lead a group that will participate in discussions, advocacy efforts, and media coverage. This group will also host events for Caregiving Youth around the country with our help. If you are interested in joining or running such a group, please reach out to our Communications Manager, Dylan Wilde: dylan@aacy.org

FEATURED COMMUNITY PARTNER:
Safe Schools Institute
|
AACY would like to thank our partner, Safe Schools Institute, for hosting our CYI Conference last week. Safe Schools Institute has been a steadfast partner to the AACY and has hosted many of our events there. The SSI staff are always helpful and forthcoming, and they are eager to help us succeed, setting us up with presentation spaces, technology, and kitchen/serving space. Thanks Safe Schools Institute!

CYP SCHOOL SHOUT-OUT:
Pahokee Middle-Senior High
|
A special acknowledgment goes out to Pahokee Middle/Senior High School staff. Specifically, we'd like to thank Dr. Golphin, Mr. Tabuteau, Ms. Shaw, and Ms. Wilson in Student Services at the Middle School, and Ms. Hernandez and Ms. Sterling at the high school front desk, even the parking lot attendant. You all played an integral part in helping the Family Specialist provide services and support to the Caregiving Youth at your schools by providing a space for Lunch & Learns and group meeting space. This is so appreciated, especially when we know that the school day can be hectic and unpredictable. That is why The American Association of Caregiving Youth would like to express our most sincere gratitude for your support, teamwork, and all that you do for us!

Recycle Old Ink Cartridges
|
When you recycle your old and/or used ink cartridges with us, you not only help the environment, but you help support one of AACY's many initiatives!
When we mail in those old and/or used ink cartridges, Planet Green donates back to AACY!
Want to collect ink cartridges from family and friends? This is a great way to earn additional community service hours!
Thank you for your support!
|
A reminder: please submit your Community Service Hours for the work you do at home!
If you have any questions, need more information or help to complete the form, please contact your Family Specialist.

Hello caregivers,
You are finally in the home stretch…one month left of the school year! I know the end of the school year brings a lot of academic challenges and stress. The staff at AACY is here to help you! Last summer, we launched Caregiver’s Corner, a weekly support group for caregivers to gather virtually. We participated in activities, engaged in discussions, and created lasting friendships. If you are interested in being a part of Caregiver’s Corner this summer, please email me at rachel@aacy.org or speak with your Family Specialist.
As always, if you are interested in learning coping skills to improve relationships or help with stress, anxiety, depression, etc., please speak with your Family Specialist about receiving free counseling with AACY.
Enjoy the rest of your school year!
Ms. Rachel

The first African American college was chartered
On April 29, 1854, by an act of the Pennsylvania legislature, Ashmun Institute, the first college founded solely for African American students, was officially chartered.
Established in the rolling farmlands of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania, Ashmun Institute was named after Jehudi Ashmun, the U.S. agent who helped reorganize and preserve the struggling African-American colony in Africa that later grew into the independent nation of Liberia. The Ashmun Institute, chartered to give African Americans theological, classical, and scientific training, opened on January 1, 1857, and John Pym Carter served as the college’s first president. In 1866, the institution was renamed Lincoln University.
