Well, we are quickly coming to the end of the 2021 – 2022 school year. Soon our students will be completing what, at times, seemed an insurmountable mountain -- a school year filled with Covid-19 and the chaos that has surrounded it. To say that the last 2 years has created learning deserts for children, despite the heroic efforts of their teachers, is an understatement...more
Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Alicia Winsor-Contreras, a (fairly) new Reading Buddy who has quickly adapted to our program and found love in our mission. Alicia became a Reading Buddy in 2019 during her junior year of college when SAYL caught her eye. Her passion for being a Reading Buddy sparks from her personal experience as a kid. “From a young age, I have always loved helping people. I found SAYL to be a perfect opportunity to help those who are struggling with reading. When I was in grade school, I had the most difficult time with the subject of math, but I never forgot the teachers and tutors who helped me along the way. I wanted to be that person for the students who are part of SAYL – to give them not only a sense of hope but inspiration!” says Alicia.
When SAYL began the recruitment process after being at a standstill throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Alicia was one of the first volunteers to sign up and safely return into the school setting. She is a firm believer that, “Reading develops more than just vocabulary and writing skills, it allows a child to understand various emotions...reading helps the child associate their feelings with words and to find new ways to express themselves.”
It is volunteers like Alicia that allow San Antonio Youth Literacy to keep persevering, have hope in dark times, and the reason we are moving the needle on reading levels in San Antonio, Texas.

Alicia— we cannot say thank you enough!

Site Director Spotlight

This year, we would like to spotlight Monica Guhlin. She started her teaching placement for 2nd grade in 2010-11. Approached by San Antonio Youth Literacy, she took on the primary role as the Campus Coordinator for SAYL at Bonham Academy and stood side by side with us for twelve years. As a teacher, she would personally see reading progress throughout the year (e.g., reading test scores) from her students. She feels it’s important to read one-on-one with children as it builds confidence, improves student behavior, and even increases student attendance. Monica states, “My students would benefit from reading with a mentor Reading Buddy who would spend thirty plus minutes per student every week throughout the entire school year. Every year my students would show great gains in their reading skills. My students enjoyed reading with their Mentor Reading Buddy every week.” In all, Monica serves as the epitome of a Campus Coordinator model for San Antonio Youth Literacy. Since she is retiring, we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all that she has done.

We are extremely grateful for all your hard work, dedication, and contribution to SAYL. Monica, thank you again for your loyalty and confidence. Your service has been greatly appreciated!

With a heavy heart, we bid you goodbye (for now). We hope to see you transform from a Campus Coordinator to a Reading Buddy!
