Seattle's Benchmarked Buildings Reduce Emissions Nearly 5%

A recent report released by the City of Seattle's Office of Sustainability and Environment reveals that Seattle's benchmarked buildings are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving money, and improving performance. Highlights of the report include a reduction in energy use by 3.7% and decreased total carbon emissions by nearly 5% in buildings that benchmark.

Seattle's Energy Benchmarking  ordinance requires owners of commercial and multifamily buildings 20,000 sq. ft. and larger to track their energy performance and report it annually to the City of Seattle. While benchmarked buildings have reduced emissions and saved energy, the City's building boom means more savings are needed to meet the City's ambitious climate goals.

Controls Specialist Apprenticeship Opportunity

The immediate need for skilled controls-oriented specialist by local employers affords a unique opportunity to build a new talent development structure, where the technical skills can be learned largely on the job.  A group of employers, led by MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions and Siemens Corporation, have committed to a public-private partnership with West Sound STEM Network and South Kitsap School District to establish the first of its kind controls specialist registered apprenticeship program for youth and adults.  Together, they have convened a wide range of employers with high schools and colleges in the region to create the nucleus of an apprenticeship program that is scalable across the State.

Regional Pump Data Needed

The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) has undertaken a research project in support of their new Extended Motor Products (XMP) Initiative.  The XMP Initiative is focused on accelerating the adoption of more efficient motor driven products, and the current research is focused on characterizing Circulator and Commercial & Industrial pump operation in the Pacific Northwest. One of the goals of this initiative is to make it easier for pump owners and operators to scope and install efficient pump systems, driving the cost of operation for pump systems down.
A recorded webinar explaining the program is available here and slides from the presentation can be found here.
Participation in the research includes submitting pump characteristic information on commercial and industrial pumps and circulators, as well as logged operational data (e.g., speed, flow, power). NEEA has a team dedicated to helping facilitate the data collection and make it as easy as possible for you to submit data. Additional materials and data collection forms are attached and available online here: https://conduitnw.org (search for XMP Initiative).  If you are interested in participating in the XMP Pumps Research please contact NEEC at [email protected] or via phone at 206-292-4793

Thank you, and we look forward to working with you to transform the pump market in the Pacific Northwest.
