October 11 - October 20, 2024 | |
On Thursday, Saint Paul's wrapped up our two-week stint as the neighborhood's living room after Helene. The church was lucky never to lose power and, as best we could, put that fortune to work for the community with food, air conditioning, power for charging electronics, water, coffee, WiFi (when we had it), ice, and eventually pet food and baby formula and diapers donated by other churches and organizations and companies who were also doing everything they could to follow Jesus through a historic storm.
We've wrapped up the day shelter, but we aren't wrapping up our commitment to share what we have, in the name of God, with anyone who needs it. That commitment is about 275 years old for us and, I trust, is still just getting started. I am so grateful to the many parishioners and friends who made these two weeks go so well.
We did some things these last two weeks that we don't usually do. But we were able to rely on the same habits that we have built over many years of sharing, serving, loving, and relying on deep roots to let us be flexible in a new situation. We were able to do what we were able to do this fortnight because all of that work was an expression of who we are.
Folks remain in all kinds of levels of stress and distress as storm recovery efforts continue. Saint Paul's will continue serving our neighbors from the love of God as needs evolve. And when Hurricane Helene becomes something living in our memories like the ice storm from a years ago, Saint Paul's will still be living off of the same habits of loving and sharing and caring. These weeks were an intense display of who we have long been and are continuing to become. Thanks be to God. It is a joy to be Saint Paul's with you.

Hornsby Teacher Appreciation Day
October 18
We are continuing to expand our ministry at Hornsby Elementary, serving as a sort of PTO for the school to provide support to teachers and staff. We would like to do special things for teachers/staff on holidays and teacher workdays. This might include special surprises to put in their box at school and refreshments in the teachers' lounge. This a wonderful pick me up for our friends at Hornsby and another great way to live out loving our neighbors. Parishioners could volunteer by baking or purchasing treats or volunteering to gather and package treat bags. Contact Barbara Coleman to join this ministry.

Save the Date: CSRA Walk for Water
November 9
The CSRA Walk for Water returns this year and once again Saint Paul’s is the midway point of the walk. We’re excited to support this event and invite you to join this important work.
In this season of Thanksgiving, the walk is a tangible way to increase gratitude for our many blessings and love for our neighbors. We will gather at the SRP Park on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM. We will walk with empty pails from the SRP Park baseball field in North Augusta to the Saint Paul’s parking lot. We will fill our pails and walk back to the park.
The Walk for Water puts a creative twist on the typical “fundraising walk.” This walk connects us with the trek billions make every single day to carry home untreated water for basic subsistence.
You can support this event by joining our walking team, volunteering to serve as hospitality at Saint Paul’s, or giving to our Saint Paul’s team. More details to come.
