October 27 - A good, full day!

Legacy Celebration

At the conclusion of worship, we will stand together for a few minutes in our Legacy Garden. We will add two bricks to our memorial garden, giving thanks for the lives and legacies of Fred Prince and Betty and Buck Blankenship. This has become an annual tradition as we remember the visionary generosity of those who support their church family with a gift from their estate.

A Morning with Dr. Bill Leonard

Bill Leonard is the founding Dean and Professor of Divinity Emeritus at Wake Forest Divinity School. His research focuses particular attention on American religion, Baptist studies, and Appalachian religion. He is an ordained Baptist minister, an active member of First Baptist, Highland Avenue in Winston Salem, the author or editor of 25 books, and a witty and insightful lecturer.

Bill will be with us for a 9:45a discussion on Contemporary Racial Issues, and will be our guest preacher. He will focus on the current state of the separation of Church and State.

Please Sign Up for the October 27 pancake supper fundraiser for The Counseling Center at Charlotte.

On Sunday night, October 27 from 5–7p, we will host a pancake supper in the Community Center. Charlotte’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated, Tommy Tomlinson, will speak. The wonderful dinner (pancakes and the works) will be provided by BrooksCakes. (You can note any dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free, when you register.) Tickets are $25 each, which secures you a wonderful dinner, an entertaining presentation, fellowship around the tables—and support for our Counseling Center at Charlotte.

It’s going to be a full day, but All of this is good stuff. We hope you plan to join us. - Russ

Deacon of the Week: Max Carroll

I joined Park Road Baptist Church in the fall of 2003 after having been invited by Michael Simmons to attend a service. My church affiliations prior to that were Southern Baptist in Mississippi and Georgia and Metropolitan Community Church of Charlotte. I have been retired since 2007. My career was primarily with Bank of America and its predecessors. I have been divorced since 1986 but am very close to my three adult children and six grandchildren ranging in age from 12 to 21. Since my retirement, I have stayed busy doing volunteer work at Park Road Baptist Church, PrimeTimers of Charlotte, and Villa Heights Community Organization. At Park Road Baptist Church, I am serving my second term as deacon, leading VSP (Very Special People, our senior adult group), serving as assistant Church Treasurer, and being a member of the Abundant Grace Connection Group. Also, I am a member of PrimeTimers of Charlotte (CLTPT), which holds its monthly meetings in the Community Center of our church. CLTPT is a social organization serving the greater Charlotte area. It offers many opportunities for social, educational, and recreational activities for mature gay and bisexual men. Finally, I am Treasurer of Villa Heights Community Organization and serve on the Board.

Sunday-Only Choir - This Weekend

Each 3rd Sunday of the month we give you a chance to sing in the choir without having to come to a Wednesday night rehearsal (though, Wednesday night rehearsals are a lot of fun!) Anyone who is interested may join Bob Pritchard in the Choir Room this Sunday morning at 9:30a. The anthem will be easy enough to learn in an hour, and present during the 11a worship service. We’ve had good response – and would love to include you This Sunday!

Smile...

On Sunday, October 20 or Sunday, October 27, come to worship and get your picture taken for our upcoming digital directory by one of our deacons. What a great way to put names and faces together! You can also send a photo to Becka (info@ParkRoadBaptist.org) of you and any family members to be included. If it is easier, take advantage on either one of those Sundays either just before or just after worship, and we

will take the photo.

Disaster Relief in Western North Carolina

We are working with Mars Hill Baptist to provide help with hurricane relief in whatever ways we can and for as long as necessary. Last week, we delivered supplies that included paper towels, toilet paper, 5- gallon water containers, baby formula, diapers, socks, underwear, blankets, batteries, and childrens’ crayons, coloring books, modeling clay, and puzzles. The need now is for warm clothing as the temperatures begin to fall. Please donate hats, gloves, thermal underwear, sweaters, and coats. The need is pressing so please don’t delay; we will deliver as soon as possible. You may bring donations of new or very slightly used items for both children and adults to the church office or to Helt Hall this Sunday.

Would you like to be part of a team that goes to Mars Hill to provide hands-on support? It would most likely be in the form of getting mud out of homes, removing debris and wet insulation, and repairing flood damage. Just be aware that flexibility is the key word. We are going there to help with whatever the needs are at the time. The soonest that Russ and Dan are both available to go is on Wednesday November 6 to Friday the 8th and again on Thursday, November 14 to Saturday the 16th. The plan would be to depart at 8a on day one and work until dark on day 3 before returning to Charlotte. Mars Hill will be ready to host volunteers starting on October 30, so if there is someone who would like to organize a trip before November 6, please let us know. These trips are likely to be the first of many hands-on opportunities to help in the coming weeks and months. If you are interested in going on November 6-8 or on November 14-16, sign up in Helt Hall or email/call the office (Info@ParkRoadBaptist.org).

Fun Food Friday: Optimist Hall - Back by Popular Demand!

On Friday, October 25, we will return for lunch at Optimist Hall. Several folks have asked to return, so we can all try a different restaurant in this eclectic Food Court. Please sign up in Helt Hall or call the church office, to let us know whether you plan to ride with us (Meet in the parking lot at 11:15a.) or meet us there (1115 N. Brevard Street) at 11:30a. There are about a dozen options, ethnic and home cooking. Hope you can join us.
