Ingham ISD Employees Honored
with ACTE Region 1 Awards
On Thursday, May 6, Scott Westenberg, Automotive Technology Instructor, and Lindy Daman, College and Career Preparation Coordinator, were honored at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Region 1 Conference in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Westenberg received the 2023 ACTE Region 1 Lifetime Achievement Award and Daman received the 2023 ACTE Counseling and Career Development Professional of the Year Award. Both Westenberg and Daman are on staff at the Wilson Talent Center (WTC).

ACTE Region 1 is made up of 15 states including Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. Both Westenberg and Daman received the Michigan ACTE honors in January which automatically advanced them to the Region 1 awards. As Region 1 winners, they now advance to the ACTE National Conference which will be held November 29 – December 2, 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Westenberg is in his thirty-first year as an instructor of the Automotive Technology program at the WTC. Throughout his career, he continues to remain up to date on instructional strategies, making sure his students leave his program ready for their next steps in life. In addition, Westenberg has created a Motorsports Team for his students, providing leadership and scholarship opportunities and is chairing a fiftieth anniversary car show in June 2023 to reunite alumni over his 30+ year career.

Daman has been with Ingham ISD since March 2000, serving in a variety of roles. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). Daman currently works with local districts in our service area supporting career exploration activities. In addition, she works with the Capital Area College Access Network creating college and career preparation events, hosting FAFSA workshops and making students aware of scholarship and apprenticeship opportunities.

“We are thrilled to not only have Scott and Lindy honored at the state level but now at the regional level,” notes Joe Wenzel, principal at the Wilson Talent Center. “Their passion for their professions and for our students is visible each day. We look forward to seeing them advance to the national ACTE conference stage,” Wenzel also noted.
Two Wilson Talent Center Students Win National Invest Scholarships
Two Wilson Talent Center (WTC) Business & Risk Management students have earned national scholarships from Invest - Insurance Education for Future Leaders. Samantha Snider, a senior from Leslie High School, and Dominic Casali, a senior from Mason High School, are the recipients. Both students are second-year students in the Business & Risk Management program at the WTC.
Invest is committed to the insurance industry and continuing education. According to their website, scholarships are awarded each year to high school seniors and college students currently participating in the Invest program to pursue insurance related education or careers. 100% of the scholarship funds go to students. In 2022, $25,000 in scholarships were awarded to five Invest graduates looking to pursue higher education in insurance and financial services or to assist with licensing fees. The WTC program utilizes the Invest curriculum.

Snider was awarded the top $10,000 scholarship and Casali was awarded one of four $5,000 scholarships. Both students are planning to continue their insurance/financial services education after graduation. Snider will begin at Lansing Community College and Casali will attend Michigan State University.
“Sam and Dominic are so deserving of these scholarships, notes Business & Risk Management instructor, Monique Colizzi. “For my students to win two of the five national scholarships presented is such an honor as their instructor. They have worked incredibly hard to earn insurance designations, build relationships with mentors and take advantage of opportunities available to them because of this program. I can’t wait to see what they do in the future,” Colizzi also noted.

The Wilson Talent Center, operated by Ingham Intermediate School District, offers career and technical education programs for high school juniors and seniors who reside in Dansville, East Lansing, Haslett, Holt, Leslie, Mason, Okemos, Stockbridge, Waverly, Webberville and Williamston. Applications are also accepted from Lansing School District, Fowlerville Community Schools and Eaton and Clinton County schools.
