Big Strides for Day Centers
Don't ever tell our nurse, Deb, something can't be done. For anyone that knows Deb she is a force to be reckoned with! As we encourage our staff to take on additional trainings and classes that will benefit them and the center, we discovered in the state of Indiana day centers certified nursing assistants' clinical hours do not count for any advanced trainings and/or classes.
So, Deb spent countless hours to get this changed. She didn't stop when she hit a roadblock. She took this issue to the top at the health department. Needless to say, she succeeded! She got our center approved to have their CNA hours count towards additional trainings.
Not only does this feat support and appreciate our staff but it allows the health department and other training sites to recognize the benefits and successes of day centers.
This not only will allow our staff to gain additional trainings, but this will allow us to be a site to support our local schools with their CNA program. We can now offer to be a site for CNA's to get service learning with us!
Way to go Deb, Still Waters is blessed to have you on our team.
Caregiver Spotlight- Patsy and family

Ms. Patsy turned 90 years old on April 29. Throughout her entire life, she has always demonstrated a joy for life, happiness, humor, and music. Her compassion for others including serving others has been her guiding light. In July 2022, Patsy’s life was turned upside down when her best friend and husband of 66 years passed away unexpectedly.  She went from living independently with her husband in her own home to suddenly living with her youngest daughter and her family. Life changed quickly for everyone. As Patsy's disease progressed, her need for oversight has increased. Through participation in Still Waters Adult Day program, Patsy has been able to gain some independence back in a safe environment that allows for socialization and participation in many activities. While she still has her support and strength at home with her family, she is able to meet and make new friends at Still Waters experiencing joy once again through music, pet therapy and socialization.
Still Waters was blessed to celebrate her 90th birthday with her at the center. It was a fun birthday celebration from a catered meal to a live jazz band! Patsy has developed some amazing friendships at the center, and it is always fun to see the smiles on everyone's face as we celebrate our guests' birthdays!
From Dementia Guests to Chicken Caretakers: The benefits of chickpower
It is never too late to add "chicken rancher" to your resume.
Welcome to the Still Waters chicks!
The director raises chickens at home and needed a warm place until they could be moved outside with the other adult hens. It has been fun to watch the guests and even CUMNS kids interact with them daily.
Many people believe animals are good for our emotional health, alleviating anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that pets may have a physical effect on us, including reduced blood pressure, reduced heart rate, reduced cortisol, and increased serotonin.
It has been fun to watch the guests interact with them. One of the guests had a chicken farm so she was a natural with holding them. Another guest has taken on the responsibility to help feed them when he notices their feed needs replaced. One time a chick escaped the cage and all the guests tried to help catch it to put it back in the cage!
It is something we forget about, not just with the elderly but those with dementia, their purpose and meaning in life. The chicks give them a responsibility and a purpose. We all need that meaning and purpose in life.
The smiles are contagious from both the guests and youth from CUMNS!
Feel free to stop by over the next few weeks to hold one if you haven't already.
Pajama Day at Still Waters
At Still Waters we wore our pajamas to work on April 19 in appreciation of National Pajama Day. At Still Waters our staff love to engage in fun with our guests. This fun helps establish a strong rapport with the guests. Their job is far more than just taking care of them while at the center and helping them with their health care and activities of daily living.
Bringing laughter and fun both with staff and guests significantly improves our guest's quality of life. Our staff build a foundation with the guests while showing compassion, trust, interest, respect, and transparency.
Still Waters is a combined family of guests, staff, and their families.
