Volume 9 - Issue 07 | July 2021
We have a new resource: hoopla!!
Not familiar with hoopla? It's much like the Overdrive/Libby service that we currently have. All you need is a Nevins Library card, and either through the hoopla app or through their website, hoopladigital, you can borrow and read, listen, and watch more than 950,000 eBook, audiobook, comic, movie, TV, or music titles.

All you need to get started is to have a Nevins Library card, and either download their app (hoopla by hoopladigital) via your device's app store, or go to their website and sign in!

If you have any questions about how to start enjoying all the books and media give us a call, 978-686-4080 x12 or stop by the Reference Desk.
More Virtual Author Events
The Nevins Library, alongside other Massachusetts libraries, are pleased to present two more virtual author events in July!

First, on Wednesday July 7th at 7pm, writing duo Lynne and Valerie Constantine, aka Liv Constantine, will be talking about their new book "The Stranger in the Mirror".

Then, on Wednesday July 21st at 7pm, join bestselling author Kate White and Hank Phillippi Ryan for a conversation about her new thriller, "The Fiancée", where a captivating woman joins a family and threatens to upend their picture-perfect lives.
Porch Chats
July 14th, Aug 11th & Sept 8th at 10:30 AM

Did you miss our first Porch Chat in June? That's okay, we have one in each of the next three months!!

So, if you're looking for a little friendly conversation? If you want to share something great you’ve read with others? Or just want to just sit on our front porch for a spell and have a listen? Stop by the Nevins Library for our new Porch Chats, taking place on our front porch this summer. (Which can easily be accessed through the library).

A librarian or two will chat up some great new books we have on the shelf, to get the conversation going. But where the conversation ends is up to you! This will be fun and very casual, and who knows where it might lead?
Summer Reading for Adults

Our Summer Reading for Adults has started!! And this year, there is a special grand prize!

This year, the program will last 7 weeks and started June 28th. There will be a gift card giveaway each week. All you need to do to be entered into the drawing is read or listen to a book and fill out the entry form online. That's it!

In addition, all the entries are kept until the end of the program for the grand prize drawing - which is a brand-new Kindle Fire 7 (with Alexa)!

There will be additional ways you can enter the drawing for the grand prize as well - keep an eye out for those this summer. The grand prize drawing will be August 16th. Thank you to the Friends of the Library for providing the Gift Cards.
Friends of the Library News

The Friends invite you to Texas Roadhouse on July 22nd for our Summer Dine-Around Methuen fundraiser. You will find a flyer at the Library Main Desk or on our website. So don't cook on a hot night, take-out or eat-in at Texas Roadhouse and help the Friends raise money for Library programs.

We had to postpone our Krispy Kreme donut fundraiser last month, but never fear, we rescheduled the delivery date for Oct 8th. At our Book Sale in September, our volunteers wearing Krispy Kreme hats or a T-shirt will be at a table to sign you up for a dozen or several dozens of those delicious glazed donuts. The cost for one dozen donuts is $11. Proceeds from the sale will go to funding Library programs for all ages.

And, speaking of the Book Sale, mark your calendar because it's back again, the weekend of September 25th -27th.
Museum Passes are Back!
Don't forget about the Museum Passes available through the Library this summer! As local museums, zoos and other places of interest are reopening, so are the museum passes for discounted admission. All you need is your library card number and PIN (and we can help you remember what that is) and you can go on the Library website to reserve a pass for the New England Aquarium, either Zoo (Stone or Franklin Park), the Museum of Science and more.

The passes can be reserved through the website or by calling the Main Desk at 978-686-4080. These passes are date-specific, and should be reserved early. Be sure to pick up your pass early too as in most cases, you will also need to reserve your entry time and pre-purchase admission tickets with the museum itself.

The Nevins Library is grateful to the Friends of the Library for providing these wonderful passes.

What's Happening in Children's?
Baby Belugas at the Mystic Aquarium!
We were delighted that so many children picked up Summer Programs swag bags last month -- and we still have plenty, so come get yours if you haven’t already! Remember that we’ve got you covered when it comes to children’s summer learning and activities: we offer paper and online logs to track reading and math, we have a wonderful selection of Summer Reading books, and kids can earn snazzy beads for their summer learning and for participating in Children’s Department programs and contests!

Speaking of programs, we have quite a line-up in July, including the chance to Meet Beluga Whales from the Mystic Aquarium (yes, it’s on Zoom, and we know you’re probably sick to death of zooming anything – but this cool program truly is worth another zoom session. After all, they are some of the cutest whales in the ocean!)

We’re also offering a fun family concert with musicians Steve Blunt and Marty Kelley, as well as an entertaining program with master storyteller Diane Edgecomb.

Other in-person programs include Books & Bubbles, Story & Craft, Bilingual Storytime, Yoga for Kids, Craft Club, Science Quest, Creature Feature (come meet a bearded dragon!), Family Storytime and Little Bookworms at the Nevins Farm MSPCA.

Each Saturday, when the library is closed, we’ll post a program for kids at 9 a.m. on Facebook – stories, cooking, science – just check out the Children’s Calendar on the library website for further info on live and taped programs and to register for those that interest you.

Last but not least, if you come to the Farmers Market any Friday with your kids, we’ll have a craft table to keep them entertained (11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) while you shop!

And don't forget to keep an eye on the Children’s Department calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about upcoming programs and special events – there’s so much fun in store!

Happy July, and Happy Reading!
