(Headingley, MB) Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C), along with its collective of 10 provincial members, is inspiring students to explore careers in agriculture and food this November for Canada Career Month, a national campaign initiated by the Canadian Career Development Foundation (CCDF). By putting agri-food careers into the spotlight through its thinkAG initiative, AITC-C hopes to get Canadian teens curious about the diversity of careers available in the sector and help close the labour shortage gap.
This year’s Career Month celebrations include the launch of AITC-C’s new Kareero app, the release of an online instructional support guide for teachers for the career exploration game Career Case, and a 30-Day thinkAG Challenge for teachers and students.
AITC-C is also launching a new campaign during Canada Career Month called, ‘I Am Agriculture’ encouraging those in the agriculture and food industry to share the important role they play in this vital sector with #IAmAgriculture. Young people deserve to know that whatever their passions or interests are, agriculture will welcome them and has workplaces they can thrive in.
“Canadian youth are excellent candidates for careers in agricultural technology and innovation due to their technological aptitudes and willingness to question the status quo. People who did not grow up in a farming environment are incredibly valuable to agriculture. We want youth to know their fresh perspectives are welcomed and needed in our industry,” said Shayla Wourms, AITC-C’s thinkAG manager. “Throughout Career Month, we encourage teachers and parents to get these discussions happening in the classroom and at home, and we’d love to see those who work in agriculture and food showcasing their personal career journeys on social media.”
Beginning over 20 years ago, Canada Career Month has been organized by a collaborative group of career development professionals, educators, and organizations, and is celebrating 2022 with the theme, “Amplify”.
“There’s such an incredible opportunity each year during Canada Career Month to amplify the voices and experiences of all sectors through a career development lens,” says Rebecca McCarthy, the project lead for Canada Career Month from the CCDF. “November is a fantastic month to start conversations about careers, amplifying the opportunities available to students and to the Canadian public. thinkAG shares how a career in agriculture can be a diverse and fulfilling career for life.”
The Canadian agriculture sector represents an important part of the nation’s workforce with 1 in 8 jobs being in the industry. Canada plays a vital role in feeding the world and includes an incredibly wide range of professions, from those who work on farms to careers in science, technology, business, and beyond. Right now, there are more jobs than people to fill the vacant employment opportunities. We want to provide youth with experiences to grow their understanding of how food is produced, and moreover, to help them recognize that they are well-suited to fill the jobs that feed and fuel Canada and other countries around the globe.
Career Month runs from November 1st through November 30th. Follow along with #CareerMonth and #IAmAgriculture to help #Amplify career learning and encourage young Canadians to thinkAG.
