Its the first of the year and a great time to start fresh.  What do you want to do this year.  Here at the library we'll be starting a new adventure called ScienceQuest.  We hope to bring you all kinds of science programming, even when you least expect it.  We'll gaze at the heavens, wonder at the oceans and ponder the climate of our world.  We'll be increasing our collections, exhibiting new and intriguing  objects and just generally getting excited about the wonderful world we live in.  Oh and by the way, still doing  some of the cool programs you're used to.

Happy New Year from the Nevins Library Staff

Children's Department  -  Great New clubs in the New Year

Kids and technology go together like peanut butter and jelly.  The Children's department is excited to announce some new tech offerings in the New Year:

Scratch club -  4th-7th graders - January  12 @ 4pm
If you like computers, you'll love Scratch, the kid-friendly programming game where you make the rules. Want to generate your own movie, game or program? This is where to do it! Join us to tinker with Scratch and impress your friends with your awesome creations.

Bee Bots - 1 and 2nd graders January 25 @ 4pm

Come listen to a story and make your own pictures to travel to with the Bee-Bot robot. After the pictures are put on the grid, everyone creates their own short programs to move the Bee-Bot robot to different destinations. Be creative and make the Bee-Bot move using turns and forward and backward commands. Watch out for the obstacles on the grid!

Lego and Knex clubs are ongoing so check out the Calendar of Events for more options for fun building programs.

Skate & Read 2017

Nevins Memorial Library is looking forward to continuing its long association with the Methuen Fun Hockey League Skate & Read program. The program, which begins during February school vacation and runs for 8 weeks, provides Methuen boys and girls ages 5-15 with 22 hours of skating instruction, hockey skills development, and cross ice games. Players are encouraged to read at least four age appropriate books from our reading list during the season. Nevins librarians will bring an assortment of the books to the Methuen High rink during certain sessions, and the books will be available at the library, also. Players who complete the reading will be honored at the Skate & Read party at the end of the season. Kids who read, succeed, and keeping kids fit and moving is an important health goal. Most of all kids have FUN in the MFHL Skate & Read program!

All participants are invited to the Library's Annual Skate & Read Pizza Party & Movie Night on February vacation as well. For more information, log onto the city's website under the Recreation Department.  Space is limited to the first 40 players who sign up.
