Transitional housing is a very important component of the S4 Program. Once guests reach certain milestones while staying in one of our shelters, they are invited to stay in one of our transitional apartments.
They begin by paying a portion of the rent while we subsidize the rest. Over a period of approximately two years, their portion slowly increases until they are able to take over all expenses. This process allows guests the time to learn important financial habits and responsibilities, while having the supervision and support to weather setbacks should they arise.
With the opening of Evelyn's Place, we have many more guests going through our program, and there is a greater need for transitional housing. We have been incredibly fortunate to work with the Housing Commission of Talbot County as well as four private landlords to procure apartments for our guests. Over the past year, we have expanded our program from ten to sixteen off-site apartments!
We have also recently formed a partnership with Chesapeake Neighbors, a division of the Arc of the Chesapeake. Chesapeake Neighbors is dedicated to purchasing and building affordable, accessible housing in our community. They will be leasing a portion of all the apartments they purchase or build to Talbot Interfaith Shelter, including two apartments being built as part of Port Street Commons, which just broke ground this month. We will keep you posted as the project unfolds!
