Preserving And Protecting

Horses In The Wild

And Promoting Better, More Humane and Ethical Wild Horse Management

BIG THANKS TO OUR TEAM, OUR SUPPORTERS AND DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS FOR THE SUCCESSFUL RESCUE OF 20 MESA VERDE HORSES!

An Innovative, Science Based Capture Method

National Mustang Association, Colorado (NMACO) successfully helped rescue the Mesa Verde Wild horses and prevent them from going to sale barns and possible slaughter. NMACO worked for years to promote and implement a better, more humane and ethical process for managing wild horses than general capture methods commonly utilized such as helicopter, ATV and horseback chases. Such fear-driven methods prevent learning, and overcoming fear can be the biggest challenge in training. These formerly wild horses from Mesa Verde have been habituated to trust people even before being humanely captured. Every one of these horses is unusually calm and trusting towards people. PLEASE DONATE TO HELP NMACO WITH THIS IMPORTANT PROJECT AND RESCUE MORE HORSES THIS YEAR

Wild horses calmly captured, tamed and gentled, and taken to adoptive domestic homes. Trail Canyon Ranch has housed horses, fed and cared for them, and transported some of them. Dr. Patricia Irick at Mustang Camp was overburdened with horses this winter when weather interfered with all plans, but the horses still learned to love people and love learning, and can now transition to successful domestic lives. We could not have done this without the hard work of dedicated volunteers and many donors and supporters, so THANK YOU!

Special thanks to Becky, our Adoption Committee Chair, who coordinated all inquiries and communicated and arranged for adoptions, and diligently worked to be sure they had good homes.

A "Perlino" horse is born white with blue eyes. With horses, the white coat is not caused by a recessive gene and white horses do not breed true as an albino would, so true albinism among horses is non existent. Therefore, with horses there is neither a recessive albino nor a dominant white gene that creates white coats in horses. Offspring of a Perlino are often white or buckskin due to the combination of black genes combined with cream, which produces the buckskin color.

Perlino stallion known as "Maestro" in Mesa Verde. Maestro has fathered more Perlinos, including "Marvel" previously captured and adopted and Baby "Breen" who needs an adopter!

"Breen" is a young foal from Maestro, now back in Colorado with his furry winter coat and funny antics. He loves people, being groomed and he's very smart and curious. He should grow into an image of his father and half-brother, Marvel, who is super calm and friendly.

"Rico" and "Cortez" adopted together! Rico is an adorable young foal, also son of Maestro. He was adopted locally in Montezuma County with the filly "Cortez," so they can happily continue to share their bond and friendship.

Genetic testing for ancestry and color suggests that buckskins are prevalent with a Perlino stallion. Mesa Verde park plans captures of more horses this year, and our partnership with the park provides that NMACO will take all horses captured. We are committed to the humane, low stress methods that have been successful for the past two years, and will be looking for homes for more horses. Stay tuned and follow us on Facebook
