Faithful Innovation

By Cathy Schwichtenberg

I had the opportunity to participate in the Bike Path community listening session on Sunday afternoon.  What a fun experience!  Phoebe Johnson made delightful signs and posted them on the western and eastern approaches to our tent next to the path.  The theme was “Trail Magic” and welcomed trail users to stop by for refreshment and a break. Most of the people that came by were biking and many were “on a mission” which precluded them from stopping and talking with us.  But those bikers waved and smiled as they passed by.  Of those who stopped to chat there was a family of mom, dad and two teen daughters who had just moved to MN 18 months ago.  The daughters had just been saying they were thirsty when they saw our sign!  They were a lovely family and we had so much fun talking with them.  A runner stopped by who is training for the Ely marathon in late September.  She had run 10 miles already and had another 6 to go.  She sure did appreciate a cool drink of water at our rest stop.  The last group to stop by was a dad and two teen sons.  They do a father/son bike ride every Father’s Day.  We were so glad to participate in their tradition in a small way.

There is another session scheduled for Wednesday, June 28 from 4-7 pm.  I highly encourage you to sign up for a one-hour shift.  It’s so fun to learn about new people in our community.  There’s no pressure to proselytize or talk about weighty issues.  This experience is simply an outreach to help us learn a bit more about our surrounding community.  This is a feel-good experience you will enjoy!

Vestry Report

The Vestry met this past Monday. After enjoying dinner together courtesy of Cathy Schwichtenberg, we were updated on Children & Youth Activities by our Children & Youth Minister, Anna Brock. It has been a very busy and fruitful year for the ministry! Anna has worked hard to cultivate relationships with ECMN and other church youth groups. She is hard at work planning for the next program year.

For the Discernment topic this month, we revisited our Brainstorming Tree developed at the Vestry retreat in February where we captured ideas for new initiatives. We each picked an initiative and presented it Shark Tank style to the rest of the Vestry. We will continue to evaluate and plan to work on these initiatives in the coming months.

The Vestry enthusiastically approved Huldah Niles' Nomination to Postulancy from ECMN. Huldah has been approved to proceed with the next step towards becoming a Deacon. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she continues through the process.

We are happy to report that the previously budgeted painting of the church is complete. Unfortunately, our buildings and grounds have experienced a number of unexpected issues over the past few months that have needed to be addressed. The vestry approved a $1300 air conditioning repair out of the operating budget, and $9000 for a new refrigerator, freezer, and building tuck pointing from non-operating funds. Unfortunately, an additional air conditioning repair will be needed. We are awaiting details. We will also need to address some repairs to the East entrance, parking lot surfacing, and parking lot line painting in the coming months. We are also working through the steps to get the Minnetonka Blvd sign updated to the new logo.

We will be meeting on July 17th  for our midyear retreat, in which we will start to develop a new 5-year plan for St David's. This plan will be mission driven as we develop a vision that will guide us forward, living into a church that looks and acts like Jesus.

Please reach out to the Wardens or any Vestry members with questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Best,

Allison Ferro

May Financial Snapshot

Year-to-Date Income continues to be above plan and Year-to-Date Expenses are a bit above plan.  Expenses are running about 2% ahead of plan mostly because we have had some unplanned building and grounds expenses in the last few months.  Given your faithful support of St. David’s, we continue to be in a strong financial position.

With Gratitude,

Cathy Schwichtenberg, Treasurer

New Manager of Facilities - Gary Flynn

We are pleased to announce the hiring of our new Manager of Facilities (previously known as "sexton"). Welcome, Gary Flynn, to our staff and to our community! Gary will maintain our building and grounds, providing set-up and cleaning services and will work 15-20 hours per week. Please introduce yourself to Gary as you happen to see him in and around the building. Again, welcome, Gary!

Hello, my name is Gary Flynn and I am originally from London but now live in Minneapolis with my wife Maggie and two children Howard (10) and Molly (9). I enjoy playing soccer, spending time with family and traveling both around the US and back home in England. I look forward to getting to know the St. David's community.

We will include all individuals in the prayers list for four consecutive weeks, and then they will be removed from the list. If the prayer need is ongoing, please reach out and we will keep their names on the list. If anyone's prayer need is shorter than four weeks, please also note that. This way we will keep all prayer lists updated and recent.
