New Families! Incoming 9th Grade Performing Arts Meeting at Ballard High School June 13
|
|
Ballard High School’s Music and Theatre departments are hosting an Incoming 9th Grade Performing Arts Meeting for all students who will be involved with the BHS Music and Theatre programs next year. It will be held on Monday, June 13th at 7:00 pm in the Ballard High School Performing Arts Center. It is a time to meet the teachers, learn about the program, hear from current students, and meet other 8th graders who will be in the program next fall! We will also be talking about next year’s calendar of events and answering many questions that people often have as they enter the performing arts program. Please help us to pass the word along!

Spring Concerts are Back to Normal for Seating
|
|
For the Spring Concerts at school, seating will be back to normal - that is, seating is first come first-serve, unless you have reserved seating. Doors typically open around 7 pm. Masks are optional.

Last Weekend for A Midsummer Night’s Dream
|
|
The Ballard High School Playmakers invite you to indulge in spring reverie with the popular Shakespeare comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performances will be May 19, 20, 21.
Come enjoy this play about love, marriage, transformation, and the importance of accepting people for who they are!
The cast features 22 BHS students and is directed by Shawn Riley.
The show begins at 7:30 pm.

Tickets on sale at https://showtix4u.com. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students and $15 for seniors. All patrons must wear masks. COVID guidelines subject to change.

Vocal Jazz, Ballard Drumline, and Brass Band at Home Opener for Ballard FC on June 10
|
|
Ballard FC will host the Ballard Drumline and the Brass Band on June 10th at the Interbay Stadium. Ballard’s Vocal Jazz will sing the national anthem; Drumline will perform at half-time; and the Brass Band will finish up the show with a performance after the game. Parking will be extremely limited and students/families are encouraged to use public transportation if possible. Ballard High School graduates Sam Zisette (trumpet player) and Chris Kaimmer co-founded the team. Come cheer them on for what could potentially be a regular gig for the drumline.
Ticket Information
The game is sold out; however, 30 tickets will be available for Ballard Performing Arts families - one per student. Please sign up for a ticket at this signup genius, and be sure to name your student. Any extras will be announced after tickets are claimed.

Band
Marching Band to Perform in Syttende Mai parade May 17
The parade is Tuesday, May 17 at 6 pm.
Schedule
4:00 - In bandroom to start uniforms. Arrive on time, wearing band shirt. Students should bring some additional snacks to school.
4:30 - Line up and start our march to Adams elementary school (parade staging).
5:00 - Arrive at Adams.
7:00 - Return to school (when we get to end of route, we will return to school as a group).
7:30 - Return uniforms (this could take a little longer than usual as they all need to be prepared for cleaning).
We’re making international news! A Norwegian film crew will film the marching band rehearsal on the morning of May 16 for a documentary of the Syttende Mai festival that will be broadcast in Norway.
Volunteer to sign up to help with traffic control for Marching Band Practice and Parade
We need 6 volunteers. Volunteers must have completed their SPS paperwork. Here is the signup genius.
Auditions for 2022-2023 school year
Auditions will be held the week of June 6th for students already at Ballard HS. All students playing wind instruments will receive copies of audition music in the next week and will audition during class June 6-9th. Copies of the audition material will also be available on Schoology.
Incoming freshman will receive information from their current band teachers regarding audition expectations.
Class assignments will be announced the last week of school (June 13-17).
Jazz Band audition information
Auditions for next year's concert and jazz bands will be held in class on Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7. Percussion auditions will be after school on Wednesday, June 8.

Mr. Gillespie will inform incoming freshmen about the SignUpGenius and music to prepare shortly. All incoming freshmen auditions are due by Wednesday, June 1.
Percussionists will audition after school on June 9th
All percussion students, including freshmen, will be required to audition to determine placings for drumline. In addition to demonstrating double strokes and paradiddles, students will be asked to play from the attached audition materials. Students will need to sign up for audition slots here:
Jazz Master Class with Ellen Rowe
Mr. Gillespie is holding a Zoom master class on Wednesday, May 18 during jazz with Ellen Rowe, jazz pianist and composer. Ms. Rowe is also the director of the jazz studies program at the University of Michigan and composed one of the pieces students are playing in big band. According to Mr. Gillespie, "She is one of the most exceptional musicians I have ever worked with and a wonderful soul. Really should be awesome." Check out her website: https://ellenrowe.com.

Special Attention to Upcoming Important Events
Concert Choir and Advanced Chorale Tour to Bellingham
May 23rd, Monday, 7 am-6 pm
Spring Tour to Bellingham for Concert Choir and Advanced Chorale. We'll travel to Western Washington University for a clinic with Dr. Angie Kasper. We will have lunch in Fairhaven and an afternoon choir exchange with the Kamiak Choirs. We will end the day with pizza and bowling to celebrate a wonderful year! Permission slips will be coming home soon. We will need three chaperones. If you're interested in chaperoning, please email bpabchoirrep@gmail.com.
Vocal Jazz Solo Night
Tuesday, June 7, 7 pm in the Black Box Theater
Vocal Jazz will be joined by the Ev Stern Jazz trio. Please come and support our vocal jazz students for a fun night of jazz standards.
Treble Choir Seattle Tour
Thursday, June 9, 8 am - 4 pm
Treble Choir will travel to local schools, retirement homes, and Pike Place Market to share their singing with the community. Permission slips will be coming home soon. We are in need of approximately six drivers. If you're interested in driving, please email bpabchoirrep@gmail.com.

Orchestra
Wind ensemble and Chamber Orchestra Concert May 23 at 7 pm
Because of some really fun, collaborative full orchestra projects between the BHS Chamber Orchestra and the BHS Wind Ensemble, Mr. G and Ms. Fortune are putting together an extra performance for Wind Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra. There will be some really cool student work to showcase in this evening’s event, including a student composition, student conductors, and student concerto soloists!
Time is Monday May 23, at 7:00 pm in the BHS PAC.

Celebrate your senior with a personalized plaque on a seat in the PAC. This fundraiser has been happening since 2012 and we have hundreds of seats “claimed” by families acknowledging the time and work their graduates have spent in the BHS PFA Department. Final Dine Out of the Year
Duke’s Seafood on Greenlake is going to be our final dine out of the year and we hope you can join us for a special evening. It is tentatively planned for Tuesday, June 7th and we are pulling together details, including a special brew on tap and some music from our programs.

Help check in concert wear after the spring concerts
All kids will need to come to the end of year concerts with a change of clothes for after their performance. We will be collecting concert wear from students after each concert.
All groups except those performing at graduation (Concert choir, Advanced Chorale, Wind Ensemble, and select percussionists) will turn in their concert wear at that time.
