ELDER OF THE MONTH - David Hughes

SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

SUMMER REFLECTION

In the summer months here at Watauga Avenue, we are transitioning out of the Bible book studies, to enter into the lectionary readings. The Revised Common Lectionary is a three-year cycle of weekly scripture readings. This week, we hear the call of Jesus to his new friends to “Follow Me.” In this call, Jesus is not simple asking the disciples to be his shadow, this is a call to leave their home and their life, and enter into something new and something that is life giving. However, Jesus does not stop there, he calls his disciples to follow him, but he also follows them. To eat together, to recline together, and to teach them about the Kingdom of God. Where the sick are healed by the Great Physician. So join us this Sunday as we hear the call from Jesus, and experience what that life will be like.

Yours In Christ,

Brandon

GREEN SPACE NEWS

In Tennessee, where nearly half of the land is farmed, agriculture creates an economic impact that exceeds $50 billion annually and supports more than 200,000 jobs. That is an enormous footprint—especially in West Tennessee where most of the state's row crops are grown. Restoring and connecting natural habitats there is challenging but necessary for fortifying the region against flooding, drought, and other impacts of climate change.

One way West Tennessee farmers can incorporate nature into agriculture operations while gaining a competitive edge is no-till planting, in which advanced tools and techniques make it possible to place seed in the ground with minimal disturbance to the soil.  Another practice that benefits both farmland and the natural environment is planting cover crops—cold-tolerant species established between growing and harvesting seasons. Both practices promote higher quality soils that are good for crops while preventing erosion, sequestering carbon, and storing and filtering water. Success for nature and agriculture in West Tennessee hinges on overcoming short-term economic and technical hurdles that might stand in the way of putting nature to work on behalf of floodplains and farmlands.  (GSN #152)

This series of 3 short timelapse films display the wonder and beauty of both earth and sky in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. Situated on the high plateau between the Andes on the east and the Chilean Coast Range on the west and covering nearly 50,000 square miles, the Atacama is the dryest non-polar desert in the world with one of the most inhospitable terrains and climate. It is also one of the best places to observe the night skies without fear of light pollution or radio waves. These three films by Martin Heck are stunning. Music by Mattio Cupelli (original) | Music by Hector Prosser (Part II) | and Music by Ryan Taubert (Part III).

The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot

By Bart D. Ehrman

(229/EHR)

The recent National Geographic special on the Gospel of Judas was a major media event, introducing to tens of millions of viewers one of the most important biblical discoveries of modern times. Now, a leading historian of the early church, Bart Ehrman, offers the first comprehensive account of the newly discovered Gospel of Judas, revealing what this legendary lost gospel contains and why it is so important for our understanding of Christianity.

Ehrman, a featured commentator in the National Geographic special, describes how he first saw the Gospel of Judas--surprisingly, in a small room above a pizza parlor in a Swiss town near Lake Geneva--and he recounts the fascinating story of where and how this ancient papyrus document was discovered, how it moved around among antiquities dealers in Egypt, the United States, and Switzerland, and how it came to be restored and translated.

More important, Ehrman gives the reader a complete and clear account of what the book teaches and he shows how it relates to other Gospel texts--both those inside the New Testament and those outside of it, most notably, the Gnostic texts of early Christianity. Finally, he describes what we now can say about the historical Judas himself as well as his relationship with Jesus, suggesting that one needs to read between the lines of the early Gospels to see exactly what Judas did and why he did it.

The Gospel of Judas presents an entirely new view of Jesus, his disciples, and the man who allegedly betrayed him. It raises many questions and Bart Ehrman provides illuminating and authoritative answers, in a book that will interest anyone curious about the New Testament, the life of Jesus, and the history of Christianity after his death.
