The library is humming during this month.  The summer reading programs are coming to a close so you know there will be some celebrations this month.  For those who need to finish their summer reading assignments, we want to let you know the library will be closed for a few days at the end of the month so come in soon for the best selection.  (see below for more info and dates) If we don't have the book we'll do our best to locate it and get it for you from another library.  Hope you can stop by to pick up those summer read books for this last month of relative freedom.  September will be here before we know it.....YIKES!!

Nevins Memorial Staff

Due to an extensive repaving project, the library will be closed for several days later this month, specifically on August 21 & 21 as well as August 27-29.  This is the week leading into Labor Day weekend.

Due dates for all books and materials will be extended so that nothing will be due on those days. The Library's Book Drop will not be accessible. Library staff encourage patrons to use other area Massachusetts Libraries on those days, and to make sure that students get their summer reading books early! The Nevins is looking for local authors! Anyone with a published book (self-published is fine) is invited to attend our first Local Authors Fair on Saturday, October 4th, at 1:00 in the Great Hall. This is your  opportunity to stand out from the crowd by briefly touting your book at this event, which is free and open to the public. You will also have the opportunity to sell copies and chat with other authors.

We ask that each author register in advance by calling the reference desk at 978-686-4080, ext 12, or by signing up through our event calendar. Also, we ask each author to commit to bringing at least five other people in order to ensure a good crowd for this event.

The Independent Teen Theatre Club has been working hard all summer to put together a production of "Just Another High School Play".  This play comedy is about a group of actors, who have apparently been abandoned by their drama teacher, have to fend for themselves opening night in front of a live audience. The student assistant director and the stage manager step in, find a box of scripts which they pass out to the cast, and try to throw something together. What follows is a rollicking show full of physical comedy, gags, and satirical re-writings of many plays from Shakespeare to Albee.  Performances will be Friday,  August 15 and Saturday, August 16th at 7pm.  Tickets are only $5!

D.W. the Play (Entering Kindergarten Event)                                

On August 6^th at 10:00am the Nevins Memorial Library will host a special program for all children in Methuen who are entering Kindergarten in September.  D.W. counts Down to Kindergarten! is a traveling play based on the popular TV show Arthur. In the play, Arthur (the big brother) helps his sister D.W. learn some helpful things about going to Kindergarten. Following the program families are invited to go to the park on the library grounds for a special presentation of interactive tales by Storyteller Nicolette Nordin Heavey and visit other activity stations.

Christensen Community and Family Support Center; lead agency Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc, the Methuen Public Schools and the Nevins Memorial Library.

The deadline for online reading log entries for the Topsfield Fair is August 8^th . Don't forget to bring in your business sized SASE to the Children's Desk .

Help Take a Bite Out of Hunger!

Our community giving project in the Children's Department this summer is collecting nonperishable food items for the Merrimack Valley Food Bank. Please consider bringing in an item when you come to any program or during a regular trip to the library. Please fill out the back of your food tag when you bring in your food donations. We will enter you in a special Thank You drawing. The Last Day for Food Donations is September 2, 2014.

Preview Night on Friday, Saturday September 26^th from 5:00PM to 8:00PM. The entrance fee is $20.00 per person.    

Saturday, September 27^th 9:00AM to 5:00PM   

Sunday, September 28^th from Noon to 4:00PM.   

Bargain Day on Monday, September 29^th from 9:00AM to 8:00PM in which you can purchase a bag for $8.00 and fill it with as many book, DVDs, CDs or puzzles as you wish.  

We will also have our special handmade literature based jewelry for sale on Saturday and Sunday of the Book Sale. In addition, light refreshments will be sold on Saturday. Make sure you mark your calendar so you don't miss out! Proceeds from this sale benefit library programs and services.

Donations of books, CDs, DVDs are accepted throughout the year.  

Genealogy or the study of one's family history, has become an intriguing and often challenging hobby for many people. In order to facilitate this search, the Nevins Library has contracted with Ancestry.com to allow its patrons to access their family records from many different sources. Through Ancestry, you can search back through time to see the records for births, deaths, and even naturalization of immigrants to US citizens. It's a great way to piece together the threads of information to inform a new generation of the lives and times of their descendants. This database is only available at the library on our public computers.
