SPEAK UP FOR SERVICE DAY
Speak Up For Service Day on October 30th recognizes the importance of young people to be actively involved in community service. Too often, the good deeds of young people go unnoticed by their communities. Speak Up For Service Day gives recognition to the overlooked. It serves as a reminder to tell others about the contributions of young people to their communities.
Each year, the Speak Up For Service public speaking contest is held in conjunction with the North Dakota State Lions Convention. Other Lions Clubs and Districts throughout North America sponsor similar public speaking contests. Young people share their insight on issues of the day. Additionally, they speak about the contributions of Lions to making the world a better place.

NATIONAL CANDY CORN DAY
On October 30th, the country celebrates its favorite vegetable with National Candy Corn Day.
In the late 1800s, George Renninger of Wunderle Candy Company created candy corn. His sweet treat represented the bright colors of corn kernels. Originally, candy corn was yellow, orange and white. However, it wasn’t until1889 that the Goelitz Candy Company made the candy popular. Later, other candy makers developed a variety of popular colors and flavors as well.
The original confection was made by hand using corn syrup, sugar, water, marshmallows, fondant, and carnauba wax (a wax made from the leaves of a palm tree). However, modern candy makers combine the original ingredients using machines.
These days, numerous recipes create the candy corn flavors in cakes, cookies, beverages, and more.

About the Exhibition / Sobre la exposición
New Orleans has long been identified—by locals, tourists, and historians alike—with its French heritage. A groundbreaking exhibition at The Historic New Orleans Collection restores balance to that assessment. During four decades under Spanish rule (1762–1803), the city experienced natural disaster, diplomatic tensions, and demographic transformation. Despite numerous challenges, Spanish New Orleans morphed from a poorly managed outpost on the edge of an empire to a highly urbanized colonial capital—one enriched by the racial and cultural diversity for which it is celebrated today.

Features more than 120 objects — including maps, documents, furniture, paintings, books and more — from THNOC’s permanent holdings as well as from several institutions in Spain, Mexico and the United States. The display is the first and only time this selection of objects will be presented together in one space.
In a first for THNOC, “Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean / La Nueva Orleans y el Caribe españoles” will be presented in both English and Spanish.
“Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean” will be on view on the first level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal St. in the French Quarter from Oct. 29, 2022, through Jan. 22, 2023. In conjunction with our annual "Creole Death and Mourning" exhibit (https://bit.ly/3TGHAEo), Gallier House is pleased to present "Death and The Maiden" by artist and photographer Brittany Markert. The exhibit presents 12 photographic works taken inside Gallier House. Guided by her intuition within the space, Markert focuses on the figures of the women in black, who initiate the series’ protagonist into a ritual and acceptance of death. The title "Death and The Maiden" subverts a common motif throughout Renaissance art wherein a frail masculine skeleton seizes a young girl towards her fate; in Markert’s work, calling upon the silence and trauma of Victorian womanhood, the archetypes are re-imagined through the women in black and transformation of the central character. As a film photographer and printer, Markert creates otherworldly effects all in-camera or in the darkroom process. The work is an invitation, alongside the house exhibit, to consider the soul of the house and the role of Death in our every day.
This exhibition is free and open to the public six days a week (Wednesdays through Mondays) from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Stop by the Gallier House exhibition space and ticket office to view these works and learn more. Exhibition runs Oct. 5th - Nov. 14th,

New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.
Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues, and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York City in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost two decades, all the while maintaining a home in New Orleans.
He is still a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has been based back in his hometown for several years now -- that is, when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.

A family honors their living and dead relatives as they celebrate this holiday with shared food and stories.
The Day of the Dead is a happy day when Mar’s family gathers together. There are favorite dishes to enjoy, games to be played, and most importantly, stories to tell. No one in the family is forgotten because this is the day of the year when the dead come to visit the living—and for this holiday it is almost as if they’re alive again, as the family takes great joy in celebrating the things that made them special. Mar realizes she is just like her Grandpa Ramón, who kept a journal. And her sister, Paz, plays accordian, just like their great-grandfather. There are so many things that connect them all—and at dinner, Abuelita spins even more stories that make them feel close to the ones they will love forever. Ana Aranda’s tender text and vibrant art make the joy felt on this sweet day totally palpable.
Ana Aranda (anaranda.com) also illustrated Moth & Butterfly: Ta-da! (by Dev Petty) and The Chupacabra Ate the Candelabra (by Marc Tyler Nobleman). She was born and raised in Mexico City, and completed her undergraduate studies in illustration in France. In San Francisco, she painted murals in the Mission District, for the Consulate General of Mexico, and for the prestigious de Young Museum. National Publicist Day recognizes publicists around the country on October 30th and the PR they provide each day.
On October 30, 1906, the New York Times printed verbatim the very first press release written by Ivy Lee, the “father of modern PR.” Ivy Lee represented the Pennsylvania Railroad. On October 28th, 1906, 50 people lost their lives. A three-car train jumped a trestle in New Jersey and plunged into a thoroughfare creek. In response, Ivy Lee created the first press release. He not only convinced the railroad to distribute a public statement, but he also convinced them to provide a special train to get reporters to the scene of the accident.
Impressed by Lee’s innovative approach to corporate communications, the New York Times printed the first press release—verbatim—on Oct. 30, 1906, as a “Statement from the Road.” (information obtained from SearchEngineWatch.com)

Decades before the advent of the 40-hour workweek had us punching time clocks, Daniel M. Cooper receives the first U.S. patent for a “time recorder.” Patent No. 528223 described an apparatus that printed a timestamp onto a card. The invention made calculating wages easier.
1888
John J. Loud receives patent no. 392046 for a ballpoint pen. Though it is the first such device patented in the United States, its purpose was limited to coarse surfaces and never saw any great success.

Orson Welles broadcasts a radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds. Listeners believed the broadcast to be a real news event and thought aliens were attacking the Earth, causing panic across the country.

It's the Bride's birthday! Elsa Lanchester (October 28, 1902 – December 26, 1986) as the Bride of the Monster in "The Bride of Frankenstein" (1935).
THE BRIDE’S FAMOUS HAIRDO WAS SUPPORTED BY A WIRE CAGE.
Elsa Lanchester was double-cast in this movie. During the prologue, she portrays a young Mary Shelley. Then, toward the climax, she makes an electrifying entrance as the intended bride of Frankenstein’s monster. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the creature is her wild, streaky coiffure. The look—which was inspired by the Egyptian queen Nefertiti—has become every bit as iconic as the widow’s peak that Bela Lugosi so confidently rocked as Count Dracula. Over the years, it’s been duplicated in several horror-comedies, from The Rocky Horror Picture Show to Hotel Transylvania.
Lanchester’s unusual ‘do wasn’t a wig, by the way—her actual hair was used to create the look. “I had it lifted up from my face, all the way around; then they placed a cage on my head and combed my own hair over that cage. METAIRIE, LA – The New Neighbor Project will offer a series of in-person English as a Second Language classes at two different libraries on the West Bank this fall.
One ESL class series occurs at 6:30 p.m. on Monday nights at the Gretna Library, 102 Willow Drive, Gretna, .
The second ESL series occurs at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights at the Terrytown Library, 680 Heritage Avenue, Terrytown,
These presentations are free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration.
English as a second or foreign language is a language education program for people learning English.
The New Neighbor Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides support to immigrants through donation based ESL classes and citizenship classes, as well as citizenship application assistance and scholarship opportunities to help provide a pathway to citizenship.

Join Krewe de Mayahuel in our traditional Day of the Dead procession to remember and celebrate our loved ones who have passed.
Prior to procession, we will have a pre-procession happy hour with Mexican art and crafts vendors, artisan makeup artists, and food for community members to gather prior to procession.
Procession route will be posted once approved by NOPD. At arrival to the cemetery doors we will have a short solemn moment where we will encourage community members to place their ofrendas on the altar. Following will be a short cultural program by Krewe of Mayahuel and other Culture Bearers.
This is a festive yet solemn event, we encourage you to have a good time in a respectful way. Day of the Dead is a celebration that has many forms in different parts of the world and everyone is welcome. Remeber to bring a candle. There will be an altar in front of the cemetery where you can put a small offering or a picture of a loved one (if the item is valuable to you please don’t forget to take it with you when you leave).
The parade will travel on Royal Street to Franklin Avenue, where it will turn right, then follow Franklin to St. Claude Avenue and turn left. At St. Roch Avenue, the parade will turn right, stopping at the gates of the St. Roch Cemetery #1, 1725 St. Roch Ave., where remembrances will be read, and songs sung.

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas has hosted mermaids in its Great Maya Reef expo before. The Wands & Wishes Mermaids return to swim in the tank and greet patrons for three weeks in November.
Wands & Wishes Mermaids visit aquariums across the country for these types of engagements.
The mermaids will be at the Audubon Aquarium from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 3-6, 10-13 and 17-20. In addition to swimming with tropical fish, the mermaids will talk about conservation of marine life and environments and pose for photos.
The aquarium will temporarily close for renovations at the end of November.
Wands & Wishes Mermaids generally are trained divers. The group last visited New Orleans in 2019. In the past, the Audubon Aquarium also has hosted mermaids from Weeki Wachee Springs, a famous roadside attraction in Florida.

City of New Orleans’ Department of Sanitation announced that the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center, located at 2829 Elysian Fields Ave., will be open weekly on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. This temporary shift from bi-weekly drop off is in response to a higher demand for recycling while curbside collection is suspended.
Residents participating in the drop-off events should plan for longer than normal wait-times; the New Orleans Police Department will provide traffic control support to help the events run smoothly.

(Metairie, Louisiana—)—The Marine Forces Reserve Concert Band will perform a free concert on November 14, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie.
Louisiana Poet Laureate Mona Lisa Saloy will open the concert with a reading of poems honoring veterans. Miss Louisiana USA KT Scannell will then lead audience members in the Pledge of Allegiance before the music begins. The Marine Forces Reserve Band will perform under the direction of Officer in Charge Chief Warrant Officer 2 Stephen J. Talbot with Bandmaster Master Sergeant Justin A. Hauser.

About the Band: Marine Forces Reserve Band was established October 1, 1978, and stands as one of ten Marine Corps field bands. The unit is comprised of active-duty Marines stationed aboard the Marine Corps Support Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band is attached to Marine Forces Reserve, traveling to numerous stateside locations to provide musical support for all units of the Fourth Marine Logistics Group, Fourth Marine Aircraft Wing, Fourth Marine Division, and Force Headquarters Group. All members of the band are trained riflemen and fulfill Corps-wide physical fitness and combat training requirements, just like any other active-duty Marines.
