WHAT IS D DAY?
D-Day, also known as Operation Overlord, was a significant military operation during World War II. It took place on June 6, 1944, and marked the Allied invasion of Normandy in German-occupied France.
The planning for D-Day began in 1943, with the goal of establishing a Western front against Nazi Germany. The operation involved a massive invasion force comprising American, British, Canadian, and other Allied troops. The primary objectives were to secure a foothold in France, establish a beachhead, and begin the liberation of Europe from German control.
On the morning of June 6, 1944, thousands of troops were transported across the English Channel by a massive naval armada. The invasion force landed on the beaches of Normandy, which were codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The landing was supported by extensive air and naval bombardments to weaken German defenses.
The landing at Omaha Beach was particularly challenging, as the German defenses were strong, resulting in heavy casualties for the Allied forces.
However, through determination, bravery, and the support of additional reinforcements, the troops managed to establish a foothold and begin pushing inland.
Over the following weeks and months, the Allies successfully expanded the beachhead, broke through German defenses, and liberated towns and cities in Normandy. The success of D-Day marked a turning point in World War II, as it opened up a second front in Western Europe and put significant pressure on the German forces.
D-Day was a meticulously planned and coordinated operation, and its success was a result of the combined efforts of the Allied forces. It paved the way for subsequent offensives, leading to the ultimate defeat of Nazi Germ any and the end of the war in Europe. D-Day remains one of the most significant military operations in history, symbolizing the valor and sacrifice of the soldiers involved.

REMEMBERING THE GREATEST GENERATION

On June 6th 1944, the greatest generation stormed the beaches of Normandy to win World War II.
4,300 Allied personnel lost their lives serving their country in what would be the largest amphibious invasion ever launched.
We do not need to go to Marvel Movies or read Marvel Comics to know that the Avengers, our American Soldiers, have always made us a Superhero nation.
On a personal note, One of the reasons, D-Day and WW II, means so much to the Rao family, is that we also honor one of our family heroes, my late Grandfather, Major S.V. Rao (Venky) who served in world War II for the British Army and then the Indian Army after partition. He fought the Japanese in Burma.
I visited Normandy in 2019, and was so moved to visit the museums, to read about the soldiers, who faced gunshots when they landed on the beach, many of them would see dismembered bodies in the water. Men, as young as eighteen years of age, from all walks of life, dying within minutes of landing at Normandy. It was so emotional to see the graves of many of these soldiers, and to see with my own eyes, the true sacrifices made by the greatest generation our nation has ever produced, our World War II Veterans.
The best way we can honor those who sacrificed and died for this country is to never take our Freedom for granted. We must always respect our differences and never cease our commitment to equality and justice for all Americans.
At the end of the day, we must always remember our fallen soldiers not only by how they died, but more importantly how they lived: as truly courageous heroes who are everlasting reminders that we truly are the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

JUNETEENTH: CELEBRATING FREEDOM DAY

Juneteenth is an important holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is celebrated annually on June 19th and is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
Juneteenth marks the date in 1865 when Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, which proclaimed the freedom of enslaved people in Texas. This announcement came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. The delay in the news reaching Texas was due to a combination of factors, including the minimal presence of Union troops in the state and the reluctance of slaveholders to comply with the proclamation.
Upon hearing the news, newly freed African Americans in Texas and across the country celebrated their freedom. Juneteenth celebrations initially began in Texas but eventually spread to other states as African Americans migrated to different parts of the country. The holiday has traditionally been marked by community gatherings, parades, picnics, barbecues, and other festivities.
In recent years, there has been a renewed recognition and awareness of Juneteenth's significance. Efforts to make Juneteenth a national holiday gained momentum, and on June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. This designation acknowledges the historical significance of Juneteenth and its importance in honoring the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history.
As a federal holiday, Juneteenth provides an opportunity for reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and heritage. It serves as a reminder of the long and difficult journey towards freedom and equality and recognizes the ongoing fight for racial justice in the United States.

CONEN MORGAN, A SHINING LIGHT FOR MANY IS GONE
During some time away with my family, I was shocked to learn the news of Conen Morgan’s passing in a boating accident. He was one of the best and smartest political strategists in North Carolina and a gem of a person. Smart, charismatic, charming, honest, and endearing to all whom me met along the way. He was an inspiration as a rising Black American political and business star in our state, and many of us are shocked beyond belief.
In January, I ran into Conen at the RDU Airport, on my way to see Wiley Nickel’s swearing in ceremony in Washington D.C, and again later that month at the Reception in Apex Town Hall.
During our time at the airport, we caught up on my new career in radio and tv, talked about Morrisville, the 2024 elections and the everchanging political landscape in North Carolina.
Although I had lost touch with him after Covid, the two hours we spent were so precious, and we both agreed that we needed to grab a lunch or coffee to continue our conversations. Back and forth and a busy winter made it hard to get this on the books.
I will never get to have that coffee.
Conen is gone.
We often hear the phrase to be grateful for every day we have and then we see or hear a tragedy like this. None of us ever imagined that someone as bright, dynamic and inspiring as Conen could be with us one day, and then gone the next.
Life is Precious. None of us are invincible. Conen’s passing is a harsh reminder of this very fact.
We pray for his wife, Reyna, his entire family, and to his close friends, and know that he is now with God watching over us.
He will be honored and laid to rest on June 6th at 10 am with the service being held at the Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts.

Our hearts have been torn out, the pain and loss so shocking and severe, but we know that the wisdom and grace of God of Conen Morgan, will forever burn in our hearts.

Town of Morrisville Smart Cities Awards
The Town of Morrisville received two Smart 50 Awards for 2023, for both its new mobile application and its connected parks initiative. Presented in partnership with Smart Cities Connect and the Smart Cities Connect Foundation, these annual awards honor the most innovative and influential municipal-scale projects throughout the world. The awards were given formally in a ceremony on May 15 at the Denver Smart Cities Connect Conference and Expo.
“Congratulations to the awardees, who made their smart city plans a reality this year and set an example for communities across the globe,” the Smart Cities Connect Foundation said in a new release announcing the awards.
Morrisville’s connected parks initiative provides real-time data about local parks, including whether courts or fields are available for play, average temperature and precipitation, water levels, and historical information. The program makes it easier for residents to access local amenities and to make the right choices for their recreation.
Morrisville will be releasing its new mobile application, Morrisville Central, in Spring 2023. The app will provide information about local events and meetings, allow residents to quickly report concerns, book free rides on the Morrisville Smart Shuttle, get emergency notifications, and more.
The Town of Morrisville developed a Smart City plan called Smart Morrisville in 2019. This plan guides the strategic direction of the Morrisville Smart City program and identifies several initiatives that the Town has implemented or will be working to implement.

Town Now Accepting Fats, Oils, and Greases to be Re-Purposed as Biofuel
The Town of Morrisville now has an FOG Collection for household fats, oils, and greases outside the Public Works Department building at 414 Aviation Parkway. The collection is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it accepts fats including butter, shortening, cheese, and meat trimmings; oils including vegetable, olive, canola, and other cooking oils; and greases including bacon and sausage grease, gravy, mayonnaise and melted meat fats. A full list is included on the side of the collection. The FOGs can be repurposed into renewable biofuel. The collection also helps to keep these harmful substances out of the local water supply and protects household plumbing.

Weekend Work Scheduled for Church Street Park through June
In order to meet the project deadline for the Church Street Park expansion, the contractor will begin working on Saturdays. Work may also be performed on some Sundays. Residents living in the area may hear work being done on the property during the weekends throughout the rest of May and June, but workers will adhere to the Town’s noise ordinance and will not work outside the hours of 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Specifically, workers will be assembling and installing bleachers, installing sidewalks around the bleachers, building the practice pitches, and paving the parking lot. Work is scheduled to be completed in time for the Major League Cricket games that start on July 20. For more information, please visit the project page.

Join the Morrisville Senior Center (MSC) for a day trip to Granville County on June 7, exploring local attractions. The tour will leave the MSC, 4117 Davis Drive, at 9:30 a.m. and will include stops at Cedar Creek Pottery, the National Teapot Show, and a lunch eatery. Residents have an opportunity to safely dispose of household appliances in the summer white goods collection on June 8. The collection will include washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, stoves, ovens, and dehumidifiers. Please note that microwaves are not included in the collection. Microwaves should be dropped off at the South Wake Landfill at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex. The event will recognize the achievements of the African American community in Morrisville and beyond through thoughtful keynote speeches, live entertainment, food, vendors, giveaways, and more. Some activities planned include a troops reenactment, a kids' corner, and health and wellness educational booths.

Morrisville Bike Rodeo Set for June 10 at Fire Station No. 1
Did you know that more children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking than any other sport? Bike safety education and the right protective equipment can help change that.
The Morrisville Fire/Rescue Department will be hosting its bike safety rodeo for kids, from toddler age to 18, on June 10, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Fire Station No. 1, 200 Town Hall Drive. Participants can get their bicycle inspected and can prove their safety knowledge and riding ability on the skills course. Bicycle helmets will be given out to those who need one, so long as supplies last.

Esports Meetup Scheduled for Teacher Workday on June 12
Students ages 9-18 are invited to join an esports open play session at the Wake Tech Community College Esports Arena, 10908 Chapel Hill Road, Building RT 1, on June 12. This is a scheduled teacher workday, and the open play session will be from 3:30-6 p.m. Students can play Fortnite, League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Valorant. They must have a personal login for the gaming platform, as well as access to the games, as required. Participants will be assigned an open station, which will include keyboards, headphones, and a mouse. The use of personal equipment is not permitted. Please register for this event to reserve a spot.
Public Information Session on Proposed Dog Park set for June 15 at Town Hall
The Town of Morrisville is developing plans for a dog park at the intersection of Morrisville Carpenter Road and Franklin Upchurch Senior Street. To gather feedback, the Town will host an open house information session with interactive exercise stations on June 15, from 6-8 p.m., at Town Hall, 100 Town Hall Drive. Participants will also be able to fill out a survey to provide feedback. For more information about the proposed dog park, please see the project page.
Registration Open for Ultimate Frisbee Summer Camp in June and July
The Town of Morrisville and Triangle Ultimate are partnering to offer the Ultimate Frisbee Summer Camp June 26-30 and July 10-14, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Morrisville Community Park, 1520 Morrisville Parkway. Participants can learn new skills, develop their game, create new friendships, enjoy mini games and scrimmages, and build character. The camp is open to children ages 7-15, and all experience and skill levels are welcome. Each week of camp will create groups of beginners and advanced players so that every camper can have a fun and challenging experience. The cost is $175 per week. SBA ADMINISTRATOR THOMAS AND I VISIT SMALL BUSINESSES IN MORRISVILLE!
During Allen Thomas’ visit to Morrisville, he and I were able to drop in and visit some Small Businesses in Grace Park Office Center. During our visits, he was able to connect with these companies, and provide them guidance on how to navigate through a very complex system to get access to SBA resources.

Wake County Approves $1.9 Billion Budget
Wake County leaders approved a nearly $1.9 billion budget for next year.
It will mean higher taxes for many families.
"Moving from $2,000 to $3,700 was like almost double so I wasn't prepared for that," said Moe Halboon, a Raleigh father of three.
County commissioners approved a $50 million investment for Wake County Public Schools which was $10 million more than originally proposed. They also voted to raise property taxes by 3.75 cents for $100 of assessed value which was also higher than the 3.25 cent increase originally proposed.
It means for a $300,000 home, which is the median in the county, owners would pay $112 more per year on property taxes than they do right now.

NC Senate Passes Sports Gambling, Heads to NC House
The Senate took a final vote on Thursday, and now, it’s up to the House to decide whether to accept the Senate’s changes or attempt to negotiate a compromise. The margin in support of sports wagering is narrower in the House than in the Senate. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has expressed support for sports wagering legislation.
About half of the states in the U.S. allow mobile or online sports betting. As the ninth-largest state, North Carolina is considered attractive to wagering operators and pro sports franchises that could stand to benefit financially.
Legal sports gambling in North Carolina is only available right now at three casinos operated by two American Indian tribes. Bill sponsors said other sports gambling is already happening underground and that regulating and taxing it is the best way to control it.
Both bills would permit sports wagering licensees to set up locations at or near stadiums and arenas, where account holders could watch games and make bets. But the Senate version also would allow anyone to make cash bets at a venue’s betting window, even without creating an account. Should the Senate’s version prevail, horse racing would be offered through licensees separate from sports wagering operators and different online accounts.
The Senate would tax sports wagering at a rate equal to 18% of their gross betting revenue minus winnings. The House would levy a similar 14% tax, with some adjustments. After expenses, legislative analysts estimate the state would take in $71 million annually by mid-2028 from both sports wagering and horse racing.
Much of the sports wagering tax revenues would go to local, regional and state athletics initiatives, athletic programs at most University of North Carolina system schools and problem-gambling programs.
Social conservatives and liberal Democrats have spoken out against sports wagering, saying that the damage caused by addictive behavior to individuals, families and society outweighs any financial benefits to the state. While this coalition helped block a sports wagering bill in the House last year, support for the expansion of gambling solidified in the chamber in 2023.

GOVERNOR COOPER DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY ON EDUCATION
Gov. Roy Cooper took to a live streamed YouTube event on Monday to declare a statewide “emergency” over K-12 public school education funding.
Cooper, a Democrat, made clear he wasn’t issuing an executive order — like with a hurricane or with the COVID-19 pandemic — but his action was “no less important.”
“It’s clear that the Republican legislature is aiming to choke the life out of public education,” Cooper said.
The governor took aim at three proposals specifically — an expansion of the Opportunity Scholarship Program, income tax breaks, and what he termed “book banning” by Republicans. Cooper accused Republicans of “handing out private school vouchers to millionaires,” while giving those same millionaires “large tax breaks, too. This drops an atomic bomb on public education by shrinking the state’s budget by almost 20%.”
Cooper’s budget proposed a pay raise of 18% for teachers over the next biennium. “Our teachers deserve better pay and more respect, but the legislature wants to give them neither one,” he said.
Cooper ended his roughly six-minutes of remarks by plugging a website where voters could visit to contact their lawmakers. Within minutes of his live stream beginning, Cooper emailed a fundraising pitch to supporters.
Republicans were quick to denounce Cooper’s declaration.

New High School in Morrisville will be named Morrisville High
The Wake County school board’s facilities committee recommended Wednesday naming the school Morrisville High when it’s scheduled to open in 2027.
Due to high land prices, Morrisville didn’t get its first district high school until this school year when the Wake Early College of Information and Biotechnologies opened on Wake Technical Community College’s RTP campus. Even then, Heagarty noted that some town leaders had wanted to name that school after the town.
The school board recently finished acquiring another 34 acres on Wake Tech’s RTP campus for a second high school in Morrisville.
On Wednesday, school facilities staff proposed three names: Paramount Parkway High, Parkside High and Morrisville High.
The full board is expected to vote on the school name on June 6.

A train crash in eastern India killed 275 people on Friday night.
•What happened? A train took the wrong track and collided with another train. Soon after, a third train crashed into the other two. Early reports point to problems with railroad signals.
•This is one of the worst transportation disasters in India’s history: It’s raising safety concerns about the 19th-century rail network, first built by the British.
The debt ceiling crisis is officially over.
•What to know: President Biden signed the bill to suspend the debt limit on Saturday, just in time to avoid a default. The U.S. would have run out of money to pay its bills today.
•Digging deeper: The legislation also ended hope of another extension to the pause on federal student loan payments after more than three years. Payments are set to resume by Sept. 1.

•What happened? Fighter jets from Joint Base Andrews scrambled to intercept a private plane over Virginia, officials said. The explosive sound shook houses and startled residents.

A federal judge struck down a Tennessee law banning drag shows.
•Why? It violates the right to free speech, according to Friday’s ruling. The first-of-its-kind law bans drag shows in public. Tennessee is expected to appeal the decision.
•The big picture: A wave of anti-LGBTQ legislation has passed this year, including a ban in Texas on gender-affirming care signed into law on Friday. But advocates say this ruling could be a turning point.
States are moving to ban “forever chemicals.”
•What are they? These chemicals — known as PFAs — don’t break down naturally. They’re found in many everyday products and are linked to a long list of health problems.
•What to know: This year, 195 bills have been introduced in dozens of state legislatures seeking to ban or restrict PFAs. The wave follows decades of inaction from the federal government.
A manuscript revealed the medieval equivalent of late-night talk shows.
•What to know: The document, written in England around 1480, includes the comedy script of a traveling entertainer. It gives us a rare glimpse into the medieval live comedy scene.
•The jokes: The script includes riffs on incontinence, killer rabbits and binge drinking, new research found. It also poked fun at priests, kings and the audience.
