Our award winners have this months spotlight...
Nikki Waddell: My current role is as an MLA at BC Children's and Women's Hospital and in a typical day I will see patients ranging from newborns all the way up to the elderly. I love the variety of working at this hospital as an MLA. No two days are the same ever...lol. One of the things I am most proud of in my role as an MLA is the work we do with children and teenagers that have severe phobias of medical procedures. Some of the most rewarding moments come from seeing a child that you've worked with, who was previously so terrified of bloodwork, smile at the end of their procedure and thank you for your patience and caring. This sometimes requires more time than you'd like to spend on a patient, but it's so totally worth the extra effort to alleviate that child's fear and apprehension. in my spare time, I love spending time with friends and family and if that time is spent outside, all the better. If I could go back 20 years and give my self one piece of advice, it would be to find something you enjoy doing and make it your career.
Kandice Cook: I have been an MLA Supervisor for 10 years now. This role involves supporting my coworkers, filling shifts, scheduling and mentoring MLA students, scheduling and orientation of new MLA’s, problem solving as well as providing patient care in a very fast paced and ever-changing environment. | A day in my life as an MLA Supervisor is rarely the same which is part of what I love about my job. J The other part is when you can directly see from a patient that you have made a difference by making a potentially stressful time just that little bit better. || Advice for my younger self: You don’t have to be your absolute best every day. In fact, it’s impossible. But if you keep showing up and doing the best you can, chances are it will get you very far – and I did!
Josie Boutcher: Josie started her career in Lab services in 1997 as a MLA at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH). Over the years she worked in Pre and Post Analytic, Anatomic Pathology and with LM Labs Quality. In her current role she leads a team of Administrative Assistants as we support the Operations side of Lab services. A typical day could include compiling data, reconciling billing reports, leading projects, and lending support to the Technical and Medical teams. Josie is most proud of the work she did to help support the opening of the new tower at SMH in 2014 which included the implementation of Vocera and PPID (Positive Patient Identification) into the Lab enviroment for the first time in Western Canada. This sparked her love for project work and lead her to explore different areas of Lab Sciences. In Josie’s spare time you can find her spending time with her husband, 3 children and 2 grandchildren. She loves to cook, read and enjoy a good movie night. If she could go back 20 years she would tell herslef to believe in her abilities and trust that she has more to offer. Keep showing up and putting in the work, it will pay off in the end.
