FROM THE VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENT LIBRARIAN
You may have noticed some changes over the past year to the library’s collection of magazines and newspapers. Many magazines are now arriving less frequently, and some seemingly popular magazines are no longer arriving at all. This trend will continue in 2023 as over a dozen magazines at the library cease print publication and ultimately disappear from our shelves.
These changes reflect some larger trends in the magazine publishing industry. Digital magazines have gained popularity while print magazines face decreased revenue and increased printing costs. The library will continue to provide a diverse selection of print periodicals, but it is likely that many titles will continue to reduce their frequency or cease print publication altogether in the coming months and years.

Many of your favorite magazines and newspapers are still available digitally from the library on Libby, Hoopla, or PressReader. Ask a librarian to help you get started with digital magazines next time you visit, or stop by Digital Resources 101 on the third Wednesday of the month for one-on-one assistance.

WHAT WE'RE READING & WATCHING

If you're looking for a different take on the traditional Nativity story this holiday season, check out Stephen Mitchell's The First Christmas: A Story of New Beginnings. In this short book, Mitchell explores Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem from different points of view, including the ox the holy family shared the stable with, the shepherds out in the field, and the wise men who traveled from the far East. After each chapter, Mitchell includes a brief interlude that provides historical and biblical perspective and context, enriching the Christmas story. Told with wonder, delight, and a sense of reality, The First Christmas: A Story of New Beginnings could easily be considered a holiday classic.

Indian-American Sarah Tankman Mathews' debut novel takes place in Milwaukee and is a finalist for the National Book Award this year for fiction. All This Could Be Different explores identity through the lens of Sneha, a queer Indian-American immigrant, as she navigates work, family, friends, and love. This incredibly moving novel is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, and altogether impossible to put down. Folks who live in Milwaukee will recognize several local landmarks included and can likely relate to the experiences of the characters. Don't be surprised if this book takes home the award for Milwaukee and Sarah Tankman Mathews!
