Booster- The CDC recommends that everyone ages 12 and older should get a booster shot either 5 months after their initial Pfizer/Moderna series or 2 months after their initial J&J vaccine.

Please note that while the FDA approved boosters for ages 5-11 years, we will wait until the Western States makes its announcement before providing booster to this group.

It is important to remember that Pfizer is the only covid-19 vaccine approved for people ages 12+years. A second booster has been approved by the CDC and the FDA for people 50 years and older, at least 4 months after their second booster.

People 18 yrs and older, may receive a Moderna booster if desired.

Additional Dose- Moderately or severely immunocompromised people ages 5 years and older who completed their Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine primary series and ages 18 years or older who completed their Moderna COVID-19 vaccine primary series should plan to get an additional full dose at least 28 days after their second dose.

Did you know that Stroke is a leading cause of death and severe, long-term disability?

stroke.JPG

May is High Blood Pressure Education and Stroke Awareness Month

Weakened or blocked arteries in the brain put us at a much higher risk for stroke, which is why managing our high blood pressure is critical to reducing stroke risk. A stroke threatens our ability to think, move, and function. It can also affect language, memory, and vision. A severe case may even cause paralysis or death.

Are you at higher risk for HBP?

Luckily there are some risk factors that can be improved or treated:

• Cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke

• Diabetes

• Being overweight or obese

• High cholesterol

• Physical inactivity

• Poor diet (high in sodium, low in potassium, and drinking too much alcohol)

Control high blood pressure by taking these steps:

• Don’t smoke and avoid secondhand smoke.

• Reach and maintain a healthy weight.

• Eat a healthy diet low in sodium and saturated and trans fat. Limit sweets and red and processed meats.

• Eat fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry, fish, and nuts. Include foods rich in potassium.

• Be physically active. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.

• Limit alcohol to no more than two drinks a day if you’re a man and one drink a day if you’re a woman.

• Take all medicines as prescribed to control your blood pressure.

• Know what your blood pressure should be and try to keep it at that level.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we feel, how we see ourselves, how we handle stress, how we make choices, and how we relate to others. It has a powerful influence on our quality of life. Good mental health means more than not having a mental illness. Learn more by visiting this site.

Life can be stressful, and your body and mind can’t go nonstop without any breaks. You may focus on work or school, your family, or other commitments and forget you need to take care of yourself, too. This can weaken your mental health and lead to burnout. You don’t want your phone to run out of battery when you need to use it. Similarly, when your mental or physical energy runs low, you need to plug into your personal power sources.

Here is a list of simple, yet very important activities you can practice to recharge your Personal Battery. They are the foundation for your mental health and wellness.

  • Get enough sleep
  • Eat healthy food
  • Stay hydrated
  • Move your body
  • Take your medications
  • Manage your schedule
  • Connect with friends and family
  • Avoid alcohol or drugs

Springs residents! If you’re worried about your home’s water quality—as many Americans justifiably are in the wake of water scares in Flint, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey—a home water quality test can ease your fears.

Sonoma Ecology Center is providing home water quality test kits through a program of SF Estuary partnership to ensure that our community's water is safe to drink!

You take samples of your water and ship them off to a certified lab to test for more than 100 different potential health risks that may be present. Best of all, the kits are free to any residents in the Springs area! Limited supplies available, program runs through June 2022. Multi-household and apartment residents are encouraged to apply!

Margaret J. Wheatley

Thank you for investing in health for Sonoma Valley children, families, and seniors.

Sonoma Valley Community Health Center has been on the front lines providing care to our neighbors since 1992. Low-wage jobs, minimal health benefits, and the high living cost mean too many of our neighbors lack access to affordable health care. We spend approximately $1 million each year on providing care to our patients who are under or uninsured. Thanks to generous, community-minded people like you, we can ensure that all of our neighbors have access to quality care.

Thank you for helping us support our community!
