WE ARE MOVING!
The Chamber is extremely excited to announce that we are moving to a new location that will allow us to reopen a Visitor Information Center immediately off exit 5 on I-84. We are remodeling a free standing building at 1 River Road where Paw Plaza is located. The building has a covered porch, ideal for an exterior display case when we are closed. We plan on having a monitor in the window running scenes from the area, special event listings, and more. Inside, we’ll have brochure racks and we will continue helping visitors make the most of their stay. We expect to move in by July 1. We'll keep you posted!

The Chamber of Central Mass South is very pleased to announce the winners of the Chamber Scholarships for 2023. This year, scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to three very deserving, local students upon successful completion of their first semester of college with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

“Our scholarships are available to any student going to school or living in our twelve town catchment,” said Chamber Executive Director Alexandra McNitt. “Every year we get remarkable students submitting applications. It is both amazing and heartening to see how involved these young people are in the community. It is a privilege to be able to support them in this way.”

This year’s $1000 scholarship recipients are Marlee Domey, Lindsey Soter and Jacob Brodeur.

Introducing Project Keep Me – Second Chance Launches Pilot Program
for Domestic Violence Survivors and Their Pets

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (June 5, 2023) Second Chance Animal Services, a leading animal welfare organization, is proud to announce the launch of Project Keep Me, a groundbreaking pilot program aimed at addressing the critical need for companion pet shelter resources for survivors of domestic violence. This program will provide temporary housing for the beloved pets of domestic violence survivors, enabling pet owners to seek safe housing arrangements while ensuring the well-being of their animal companions.

The unfortunate reality in our area is that emergency housing resources for survivors of domestic violence often cannot accommodate their companion animal. As a result, many victims find themselves trapped in dangerous living situations, afraid to leave their pets behind. Recognizing this pressing issue, Second Chance has developed Project Keep Me as a compassionate solution to help break this cycle of fear and abuse.

Project Keep Me will offer a safe haven for pets, including shelter, food, and medical care if needed, during the transitional period when their owners are seeking temporary safe housing arrangements. By alleviating the distressing choice between personal safety and the well-being of their cherished pets, this program aims to empower survivors to prioritize their own safety without compromising the welfare of their furry companions.

The pilot program operates under the belief that no one should have to sacrifice the security and love provided by their pets due to domestic violence. Through Project Keep Me, Second Chance Animal Services strives to create an environment where survivors can confidently seek assistance knowing that their pets will be sheltered and cared for, giving them the freedom to pursue the safety and support they deserve.

Second Chance's Project Keep Me will offer temporary boarding and care, lasting up to 90 days, for pets whose owners are seeking support from domestic violence assistance programs. Upon successful transition to safe, permanent housing, survivors will be joyfully reunited with their pets. The emotional and psychological benefits of this reunion cannot be overstated, as the presence of a beloved animal companion has been proven to enhance healing and recovery for individuals who have experienced trauma.

"We are thrilled to launch the pilot of Project Keep Me," said Sheryl Blancato, Second Chance CEO and Founder. "We are offering the program on a limited basis at this time as we establish relationships with local domestic violence resource providers who ensure pet owners have the support they need. We are committed to removing the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking safety and support and firmly believe that everyone deserves a second chance, both survivors and their animal companions."

Blancato notes that the program has some limitations. “We can’t take in aggressive animals, and we have limited space at this time, but we are committed to helping as many as we can. We have already assisted several pet owners, but we are seeking additional funding so we can help more as the need arises.”

Second Chance Animal Services invites the community, businesses, and philanthropic partners to support Project Keep Me through donations. “Together, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors and their pets, providing hope and safety when it is needed most.”

For more information about Project Keep Me and how you can help, please visit www.secondchanceanimals.org/project-keep-me.

Country Bank Receives Marketing Awards
PHOTO: Country Bank's Marketing Team: Audrey Moulton, digital marketing specialist; Mike Dias, product and data marketing manager; Travis Pacheco, intern; Jodie Gerulaitis, VP, community relations; Shelley Regin, SVP, marketing & PR; Devon Wonderlie, marketing specialist; and Justin Roberts, VP, marketing.

June 5, 2023 - Country Bank, a full-service financial institution serving Central and Western Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that it has received two marketing awards from the New England Financial Marketing Association (NEFMA) for its 2022 marketing efforts.

Country Bank achieved first place with a gold award for its "Made to Make a Difference" rebrand. In May 2022, Country Bank introduced the rebrand in partnership with the bank's advertising agency, Financial Marketing Solutions (FMS). The new tagline was created from focus groups that consisted of Country Bank team members, board members, consumer and business customers, non-customers, and community non-profits throughout its marketplace.

Since 1850, Country Bank has been a part of the fabric of the communities it serves; so, it was essential to include the community in the process. As a result, the tagline was created with meaningful insights and feedback. The common theme of how the bank 'made a difference' became a clear indicator of how its stakeholders received the brand in the market.

"The introduction of the tagline 'Made to Make a Difference' has accomplished outstanding results in the past year. Our team, communities, and customers have embraced the new tagline wholeheartedly. Team members are essential to any brand's success, and ours has undoubtedly made a difference through the rebrand. Our team truly believes that we are here to make a difference for our customers, communities, and one another. With the team embracing the new tagline, we saw our social media engagement increase by 60%, followers by 40%, and volunteerism by 124% in seven months," stated Shelley Regin, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations at Country Bank. "The brand has been positively impacted in many ways, and it is exciting to witness the team's engagement and the brand's growth!"

In addition, the bank received a silver award for its Police vs. Fire Baseball Game in association with the WooSox Foundation. This game was a century-old tradition brought back to life on September 26, 2022. Part of the game is giving back to the community, something the WooSox Foundation and Country Bank are passionate about. The teams chose the Manny 267 Foundation, which received a $15,000 donation. "As a founding partner of the Worcester Red Sox, we are honored to bring back this tradition and support the police and fire departments in Worcester. It was a tremendous effort of the WooSox Foundation, the police and fire departments, and the Country Bank marketing team to make this happen. We look forward to the re-match this August, where the teams will again battle for the trophy and bragging rights. The game will also donate to a deserving local non-profit," stated Regin.

Resilient Bernese Mountain Dog Still Waiting to Find a
Loving Home

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (June 12, 2023) – Mack has captured the hearts of many as he navigates shelter life, waiting for a loving home.  The remarkable two-year-old Bernese Mountain dog mix was surrendered to Second Chance Animal Services over a year ago with both hearing and sight impairments. Despite the challenges he faces, Mack's indomitable spirit and unique communication style will make him a truly special companion.

Mack's journey has been marked by resilience and determination. Unable to rely on traditional sensory cues, he has developed alternative ways to communicate and engage with his surroundings. Using his mouth as a means of expression, Mack does sometimes resort to inappropriate mouthing to convey his emotions. Understanding his distinctive communication style requires patience, observation, and above all, empathy.

To give Mack the best chance at a second chance, he participated in Second Chance’s Project Good Dog. He received 24/7 training and support from one of the inmates at the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office. While Second Chance provides supplies and toys for Project Good Dog pups, Mack's most favorite thing from his time there was a milk crate. He loved to carry it around and the sheriff's office made sure he had one to bring back to Second Chance as a very special graduation present.

Mack has made great progress over the past year and Second Chance Animal Relocation Director Wendy Hall hopes Mack can find a family who will help him continue his work. Hall said “working with a professional trainer or behaviorist who specializes in special needs dogs can provide invaluable guidance in helping Mack develop alternative communication methods and manage his emotional responses. By approaching interactions with understanding and care, it is possible to create a nurturing environment for Mack to thrive and form deep connections.”

Mack's journey serves as a powerful reminder of the adaptability of animals. Despite the challenges he faces, Mack has the potential to flourish and bring immeasurable joy to his new family. He seeks a family who can offer him patience, understanding, and the commitment to his well-being that he deserves.

If you are interested in providing a loving home for Mack or would like to learn more about him, you can contact Second Chance at 508-867-5525 or come meet him in person at the Adoption Center, 111 Young Road in East Brookfield. No appointment is needed to visit during adoption hours – Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm, Thursday evening from 5-7pm and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm.
Country Bank pledges $30,000 to Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts

June 12, 2023 – Country Bank, a full-service financial institution serving Central and Western Massachusetts, proudly supports Junior Achievement (JA) of Western Massachusetts. For more than 100 years, Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts has provided economic education and financial literacy programs to the youth of Western Massachusetts and Vermont. JA of Western Massachusetts impacts thousands of young people each year, opening their minds to their potential and preparing them for life after graduation.

“Junior Achievement of Western MA is deeply grateful for Country Bank’s support of the JA Career, Leadership, & Innovation Center (CLIC). As a CLIC founding sponsor, this generosity has propelled JA into the construction phase of this campaign, with renovations now underway in our current office space in Tower Square, Springfield,” stated William Dziura, Development Director of Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts
Beginning in fall 2021, JA will offer a 21st century environment for young people to engage with JA programs, including:

  • Career Exploration: Helping students identify fulfilling career options and make wise decisions pertaining to post- secondary education.
  • Innovation & Leadership: Helping students expand their thinking and skill development, preparing future leaders, entrepreneurial thinkers, and innovators.
  • Financial Education: Providing students with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to make informed and effective decisions with all their financial resources.

"It has been my honor to be affiliated with Junior Achievement of Western Mass since the mid 90’s as both a classroom volunteer and former board member. I have seen the positive and lasting impact these programs have on the students. This center is just one more example of Jennifer Connolly’s tireless commitment to the students and her Team’s creative approach, leveraging technology to expand the program’s reach,” stated Tom Wolcott, FSVP, Commercial Loan Officer at Country Bank.

Juneteenth at Old Sturbridge Village
In commemoration of Juneteenth, admission to the museum is free on Monday, June 19, 2023

On June 19, 2023, we will commemorate and explore the history, resilience, and culture of Black people in America. We encourage visitors to consider the historical and present-day significance of Juneteenth through interactions with guest speakers and performers as well as Old Sturbridge Village’s costumed educators. Engage in discussions and ask yourself “what can I do to further educate myself?” about the past and how it informs the present day. We will also welcome several special guests!

What is Juneteenth? How does it connect to Old Sturbridge Village?

Juneteenth is a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in 1865. More specifically, it marks the day in 1865 when troops arrived in Galveston Texas to ensure the freedom of those enslaved at the time, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The road to emancipation was a long one and although slavery wasn’t abolished in the country until decades after the Village’s time period, many seeds of abolition were sown in the first half of the 19th century through lectures, art, articles, books, and other forms of activism.
