So many turtles, so little beach!

Washed away: People who help protect the turtles losing their home in Guyana

Almond Beach is an Indigenous community and one of 10 beaches found along the 75-mile-long Shell Beach Protected Area in Region One (Barima-Waini).

Every year, you can find four endangered species of sea turtles nesting there. Those turtles are the Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), and Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas).

Some good news for our sea turtles!

It has been a record year for the sea turtle nesting season in Florida.

Wait...WHAT?!?

Juvenile green sea turtle, perhaps blown inland by Hurricane Ian, found thriving in freshwater pond

A very young green sea turtle, the kind that breaks out of its egg, digs up through the sand, then crawls like crazy to the ocean, was discovered not out in the Gulf of Mexico but in a freshwater retention pond of an RV park in Fort Myers.

PLEASE Slow Down and Look Out!

Large loggerhead female deceased after boat strike. Red arrow indicates start of propeller strike.

It's an all too common occurrence when boats and marine animals meet on the water... boat strikes! Sadly, we receive calls on these occurrences FAR TOO OFTEN.

One way that you can help protect marine life when you’re out enjoying the waterways is to have a designated marine animal spotter on board whenever possible. Somebody that is looking out constantly for the dolphins, manatees and sea turtles that may be found in our waterways.

Additionally, please make sure you’re following slow speed and no wake signs.

If you encounter an injured marine animal while you’re enjoying your boating time or out on the beach in Florida, please call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
