"I unfortunately wasn’t able to attend the 2023 PARMA conference in Sacramento. However, some of my peers did attend and said they attended numerous sessions that provided them fantastic information they were able to take back and use productively in their respective public agency risk management positions. For me personally, I am currently dealing with a potential Cal/OSHA inspection and possible penalties and they told me there had been a very good session hosted by Hanna Brophy that might have useful information for me. How would I go about getting a copy of this session’s (and other sessions too if possible) presentation materials? I think it might be helpful for me to deal with my potential Cal/OSHA inspection."
Great question. And I’m sorry you might be dealing with a Cal/OSHA inspection soon, they can be stressful events for sure. Coincidentally, I just wrapped up an extensive Cal/OSHA inspection at my agency’s water treatment plant. They initially visited last July and then followed up in October. We had to provide reams of documentation but the end result was a small fine and minor corrections we needed to make to be fully compliant. Our experiences with the inspector were positive because we provided everything they requested by the due dates and always had open communication with them. And we learned a lot because they advised us on regulations we thought we had been complying with but it turned out we just weren’t current on. I hope your experience is similar.
In regards to session handouts, there was a session by Hanna Brophy called “Understanding the Cost for Not Understanding Cal/OSHA.” There also was a “Cal/OSHA Update” session and dozens of other sessions you may find useful. Even if the presentation materials don’t provide enough detail for your specific needs, you can contact the presenters and I’m certain they can assist you on your endeavor.
To access all of the 2023 conference session materials—and I’m assuming your agency is a PARMA member (if not it’s easy to join and pretty inexpensive, go to Membership at parma.com)—log into the PARMA website and go to the EDUCATION tab and click on “2023 Annual Conference Handouts.” Just click on the session you’re interested in and the presentation materials will be provided to you. And as I said previously, if the material doesn’t contain the specific information you need, you can contact the firm that presented (and yes, you might have to ultimately hire them if you really need their expertise) or you can check out another presentation that is related to your needs.
Thanks again for the question and I’m sorry you weren’t able to make our 2023 conference in Sacramento. Hopefully you’ll be able to attend our 50th Anniversary conference in Indian Wells next February. It’s likely going to be one of our best conferences ever and will be bookended by our keynote speaker Apolo Ohno and our closing speaker Mike Eurizone with tons of educational sessions and social events in between.
