Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
October 2024

Heatwave October
Did you know that September 15 - October 15 is Latinx Heritage Month at UCSF? There are lots of fun events and Zoom backgrounds to check out.
Move season is upon us. I used the Event Management System (EMS) via My Access to find a cool spot to work on campus today. You can too!
Save November 6th for our last 2024 faculty in-person mixer 4:00 – 6:00 PM (relocation TBA). Also, save the date on December 11th for the BCH Dean's Office Holiday Gathering Event 5:30 – 7:30 PM in the OPC (Atrium). Invitations will go out next week.
See below for a winter mask mandate in Alameda County starting November 1, 2024. Protect yourselves and your patients with flu, COVID, and for those who qualify, RSV Vaccine. Beyfortus (RSV Vaccine) is also for our patients and is also available in an office near you. Check your email in the coming week or so for more information.
Be well and stay cool,
Kelley

Staff Masking Requirements
This is a message from the Alameda County Public Health Department.
The fall and winter of 2023-2024 saw substantial waves of RSV, flu and COVID-19, and a similar pattern is expected this year. To combat the spread of these viruses to vulnerable patients and residents and minimize the associated risk of severe illness and death, Staff and other workers in specified Health Care Facilities (HCFs) in Alameda County, including the City of Berkeley, are required to wear high-quality, well-fitting masks in patient care areas from November 1, 2023 through March 31, 2024, regardless of vaccination status (see attached Order). Alameda County and the City of Berkeley are aligning with many health jurisdictions across the Bay Area in implementing this policy.
The following HCFs are covered by this Order: General Acute Care Hospitals, Long Term Acute Care Hospitals, Psychiatric Hospitals, Skilled Nursing Facilities, Dialysis Centers, and Infusion Centers.
This Order does not require patients, residents, or visitors to wear masks, although masks are strongly recommended for everyone in all health care settings, including Staff in health care settings not covered by this Order.
Order No. 20-16b (requiring Health Care Workers in specified facilities to receive annual flu vaccinations or wear masks), which was suspended last year, has now been rescinded.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
