And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…

John 1:14

I have always loved camping. Cool fresh air combined with campfire smoke and fresh pine needles rejuvenates the soul and refreshes the mind. It also sounds like a Yankee candle write-up. But seriously, waking up in the wilderness reminds us of The Creator’s design for all of creation. Sleeping under the perfectly placed stars is just another bonus (see Isaiah 40:26).

There is one part of camping I do not like. I have never enjoyed the idea of being a black bear’s midnight snack. Trying to sleep is always a challenge. When camping, I am usually in a tent or soft-sided pop-up camper. I have always been shocked at the mountain men and women who pull out the hammock and fall fast asleep like a human shish kabob! No, thank you.

Being unable to protect myself from harm while snoring is not a joyous thought, unless, I had someone to watch over me and protect me while I rested. I would sleep well, if someone was there to scare off the enemy so I can rest.

In our Old Testament reading this week in Exodus chapter 40, we will see a tent made of animal skins smack dab amongst God’s people. This tent, this tabernacle, is designed by God and is filled with his presence! Moses says, “The glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” God pitched a tent not in some far-off camp, no God came to dwell with his people where they were to comfort them, forgive them, guide them, and protect them.

Fast forward to Bethlehem. God came to His people again, and this time it was under human skin. As promised, Immanuel “God with us” came and dwelt, “tabernacled” among us to be with us, to comfort us, to forgive us, to guide us, and ultimately to protect us from the evil one.

Far before Bethlehem, God came to His people, to be with his people foreshadowing the Messiah being born in a manger. You have nothing to fear because God is still with you today. “Where?” I am glad you asked. Jesus sets up camp and lives in you.

It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. -Galatians 2:20

See you Sunday as we continue our sermon series “Symbols of Salvation.” Sleep well tonight; knowing God pitched a tent in you.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
