Why make pilgrimage to the Equal Justice Initiative's museum and memorial?

We can all learn from an inspiring 10-year-old, can’t we?

Used by permission, the article below was written by 10 year old Oliver Drenth, son of Patricia and Doug Drenth of Charlevoix, Michigan.  The local Kiwanis Club held an essay contest for which organization should receive the Kiwanis Club’s annual contribution.

Oliver won the contest, the money was donated to EJI and they later visited the EJI sites in Montgomery when his family came down to Dauphin Island for vacation.

During the Kiwanis award ceremony conducted via Zoom, representatives from the Equal Justice Initiative participated and thanked Oliver for his encouraging work.

On November 5, a pilgrimage is being conducted from Mobile and Pensacola to the EJI sites in Montgomery, with a conclusion at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Montgomery.

Central Gulf Coast CDF Freedom Schools program finalist for IMPACT 100 grant

The Central Gulf Coast Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools program has been selected as one of three finalists in the Pensacola Bay Area IMPACT 100’s education focus area. IMPACT 100 members will vote for the winner in each focus area, and those winners will be announced on October 16, 2022.

The six Episcopal Churches in Pensacola were the initial partners to assist in creating a local Freedom Schools program. Representatives from those six churches were the founding members of the initial Central Gulf Coast CDF Freedom Schools Board of Directors. Currently, the Board has members from across the community, representing Baptist Health Care, the Escambia County School District, the University of West Florida, and other community groups and leaders. Those from our diocese who are continuing to serve on the board are Dr. Sally Crenshaw, Mrs. Nettie Eaton, the Rev. Katie Gillette, Ms. Lauren Green, Mrs. Geneva Hill, the Rev. Deacon Rachel Iversen, Ms. Della Denny-Abbott Maddox, the Rev. John Phillips, the Rt. Rev. George Young, and the Rev. Kammy Young.

Members of St. Michael's Chickasaw placed a Blessing Box on their church grounds on Friday, August 26, 2022. Their goal with this box is to feed neighbors who struggle with food insecurity. Additionally, the box will provide non-members and other community stakeholders a place to bless others when they can. They hope that the blessing box will provide inspiration for other organizations (school groups, churches, government agencies, businesses, etc.) in North Mobile to add boxes as they can! What a seed to plant! One member says, "Our small congregation cannot support a food pantry, but we can feed and love our neighbors. Chickasaw is a community in need and we can offer a free food pantry space, maintain it, and fill it weekly as needed. It can complement the other food giveaways sponsored by other organizations in town. Finally, we added a secure prayer box for those in need of spiritual support. Both the food pantry and prayer drop have been well used in the month since we installed the box."

Presiding bishop nominating committee releases churchwide survey, seeks participation by Oct. 31

The Episcopal Church Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop invites all Episcopalians to participate in a survey. The responses will help the committee develop a profile of the skills, qualities, and gifts the church seeks in its next presiding bishop, considering what the church and world may look like in the next decade.

The church’s General Convention will elect the next presiding bishop in the summer of 2024.

The deadline for completing the survey—which can be found online here in English, French, and Spanish—is Oct. 31.

“We want to hear from Episcopalians throughout the church because their input will help guide us in our nominating work,” said committee member Deborah Harmon Hines, who chairs the profile subcommittee. “The survey is designed to help us all discern some of the characteristics we hope to see in the person we will elect as the next presiding bishop.”
