June is Pride Month!
As we enter into Pride Month, we encourage you to review resources about LGBTQI+ communities. Some critical topics include how oppression impacts survivors who are in the LGBTQI+ community; taking these experiences and realities into consideration in our anti-sexual violence work; and what this all might mean for ourselves, and for our colleagues as we do this work together.

Here are some great resources we recommend:

June 18th is Juneteenth!
OAESV offices will be closed in celebration.

What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a joyous historical holiday celebrated primarily among Black Americans. The day is recognized by many states, including Ohio, but needs to be considered a national holiday. This day deserves recognition and respect from all of us, and we should all aim to learn more and celebrate this meaningful day.

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that enslaved people were now free. This was 2 1/2 years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official Jan. 1, 1863. The 13th Amendment, which was ratified in 1865, freed enslaved people everywhere in the U.S. More info here.

Critical Public Policy Updates
  • Erin's Law has passed committee! The next step is a floor vote.

  • On May 26th, Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee heard testimony on HB 121, which seeks to eliminate the spousal exemption to rape and many other sex crimes.

  • Share this image on social media and tag your representatives to let them know how helpful this could be for survivors.
  • We're hearing that early this week, the Ohio Senate may release their budget. Please post this on your social media and contact your state Senators before Friday to let them know you want them to increase the Rape Crisis Program's line item in the budget!

  • Example Captions:
Ohio rape crisis programs will close their doors to many survivors if the State Rape Crisis Centers Line Item does not increase to $10 million per fiscal year.
The primary federal funding stream for Rape Crisis Centers is drying up. An increase to $10 million is necessary to avoid losing half of the services currently provided to Ohio citizens.
2021 OAESV Annual Conference
Sending Our Gratitude to Ann Brandon
We'd like to send our immense gratitude and well wishes to Ann Brandon, OAESV's previous Director of Prevention. Ann has decided to move on from OAESV but will of course remain connected.

OAESV staff and some of our colleagues joined Ann for a beautiful, virtual farewell gathering before her departure from our team.

Ann, thank you for all you have done in your time at OAESV and for dedicating almost 6 years of your passion and energy to our mission and vision!
Change & Growth within OAESV
As we ensure that we're doing the macro-level work to support survivors across 88 counties as well as our members, including 35 rape crisis programs, we want to be true to our mission and to doing the work with an intersectional and anti-oppressive lens. We continue to be intentional about our priorities, such as sustainability, internal growth, and having the right people in key positions to ensure the work is done.

Please join us in celebrating the changes below that are happening among our staff. You can learn more about all of our staff members at www.oaesv.org/Staff.
Kelly Becker has accepted the position of Director of Programming! Kelly joined us in 2016 and previously served as OAESV's Legal Advocate and then Training & Technical Assistance Coordinator. Congratulations, Kelly!
Kelly is joined on the Programming team by our new Training & Technical Assistance Coordinator, Emily Gemar! Emily joins us from OhioHealth Sexual Assault Services. Welcome, Emily!
And finally, we would like to welcome Caitlin Burke as OAESV's new Director of Prevention. Caitlin joined us in 2020 and served as our Prevention Specialist and then Prevention Coordinator. Congratulations, Caitlin!

Our Website Enhancements
You may have noticed that there have been some slight (and very exciting) enhancements to our website, such as:
  • A new Training & Events Calendar(!!!)
  • Ability to use Google Translate to translate materials (we will continue to improve the accuracy of this feature as well)
  • Accessibility settings, such as ADHD Friendly and Visually Impaired modes (person icon at bottom-left of screen)
  • More easily accessible information on our home page that highlights recent resources and data
  • Overall more flexibility and capabilities with the backend of the site. We are very excited at what these enhancements mean for providing you with training, technical assistance, and resources.

We are grateful to continue improving the usability of our website, through an anti-oppression framework.

One other change is that the Member Portal* now requires you to enter a username. All current OAESV members were emailed the new password on April 15th. If you have trouble accessing, please reach out to [email protected]. If you are part of a member organization that is up-to-date on their dues, you may share the login information with staff and volunteers at your organization.

Please also note that this password will change soon, and the new password will only be sent to those who are current on their 2021 membership dues. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you haven't renewed yet.

*This is referring to the Member Portal section of our website (www.oaesv.org/members), not Coalition Manager (oaesv.coalitionmanager.org), which is a more robust platform where many of our online trainings and resources are housed. For Coalition Manager, all members (including individual staff and volunteers at organizations), have their own unique login information. Your Coalition Manager login is not the same as your Member Portal (oaesv.org/Members) login (but we are working toward this alignment).
