Supporting Relief in Ukraine
CID Bio-Science is proud to make this month's donation to Mercy Corps, supporting humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine.

Based locally in Portland, Oregon, Mercy Corps is a global team of humanitarians working together on the front lines of today’s biggest crises to create a future of possibility, where everyone can prosper.

5 Ways to Improve Water Use Efficiency
Water use efficiency for food production can be improved at the farm or plant level. On farms, this can be achieved through optimized management. At the plant level, improvements in water use efficiency can depend on manipulation of physiological and morphological features. In all cases, scientists need precise measurements in real-time, ideally taken in field conditions, to suggest new farming practices or develop new cultivars. In this article, we will discuss five critical approaches.

Testing the Effects of Light Quality on Red Lettuce
Health-conscious consumers increasingly demand nutritious, high-quality food, causing stakeholders to closely monitor the bio composition of food products. Phytochemicals with antioxidant properties are some of the most sought-after nutraceuticals.

Phytochemical levels can be, in large part, determined by light quality, which is necessary for crop productivity. Therefore, a study wanted to find what effect light-filtering by shades has on lettuce.

Reducing Food Waste with NIRS
One way of increasing global food security is by reducing food loss throughout the supply chain. According to new estimates, about forty percent of food goes to waste, of which 50% is lost on farms. While consumers have some part to play in tackling food waste, farm and retail food loss must collectively be addressed by the food production industry. Accurate quality control and monitoring is an approach that has been proven effective.

Here, we discuss some ways that precision gas analysis and NIR spectroscopy instrumentation can be used throughout the food supply chain to lower the rate of waste.

Precision Agriculture Policy & Adoption Outlook 2023
Precision agriculture is being branded as Agriculture 4 – the next revolution to make food production more profitable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. Even though its adoption is uneven, the use of precision agriculture has been increasing consistently for the last several years. This article will review precision agriculture technologies, their adoption, and how precision agriculture policy is changing as we move toward 2023.

NIR Spectroscopy to Assess Food Adulteration in UBF
Unripe banana flour (UBF), also called green banana flour, has the potential to increase food and nutrition security because of its many health benefits. However, standards to control and regulate food safety and technologies that can be used for quality control of this lucrative product are missing in many countries, allowing adulteration with cheaper and low-value flour. A recent doctoral study from South Africa found solutions to fill the knowledge gap using a commercially available NIR spectroscopy-based device.
