This Summer’s End issue of Sophisticated Living Columbus marks the start of our 8th year of publishing in central Ohio and my 9th anniversary with the magazine as a national contributor. It also happens to coincide with the start of my 5th decade of life. The growing pains and life changes I have experienced over the past several years have no doubt been evident in the evolution of not only this column, but the overall content and character of our local edition.
In no way could I have imagined the peace, gratitude, and optimism with which I would ring in my 50th birthday and 7thanniversary of SL Columbus. In some ways this issue fittingly honors a portion of the community of new and old friends who have encouraged me in moments was I sure the magazine (or I) wouldn’t make it... continue reading

PICTURE CAVE GOES TO AUCTION
|
In a remote area of eastern Missouri, roughly 50 miles outside of the bustling urban center of Saint Louis, prairies meet the Ozark plateau, and a mystical plat of land richly packed with natural resources conceals a well-known subterranean masterpiece that has come to be known as Picture Cave.
Housing what some scholars believe to be the greatest assemblage of indigenous American polychrome paintings ever discovered in the ancient cultural area known as Meso-America, the two-cave system was once an important ritual site for early Mississippian culture. Today it functions as a vital ecosystem for one of the densest populations... continue reading.

ADVENTURES IN HISTORY & CULTURE
|
For Markéta and Ewout Leeuwenburg, an empty-nest departure from an affluent Columbus suburb was guided by a desire to simplify, but also to seek a vibrant, walkable neighborhood that matched their enthusiasm for culture, the arts, and an international lifestyle. If you asked me to name my friend who is most adventurous, the one who is most vivacious, and the one who is most all-around badass, I’d answer all of those with: Amanda Young. I met Amanda when she was working for Recreation Unlimited, and from the moment we locked eyes, she was a soul sister. Amanda’s effervescence emanates first from her beautiful eyes, then her disarming smile, and finally with her ineffable sense of humor. Though her natural beauty is unmistakable, being crowned Ms. Wheelchair Ohio in 2015 is probably the last accomplishment she’ll mention. Ask her to share some of her biggest successes, and she may tell you about the time she...

ROCKMILL BREWERY

Rockmill Brewery, family owned and operated since its opening, has made a name for itself among the Columbus craft beer community. Barbee originally hoped to open a winery, his original passion, on the property. However, a serendipitous discovery led to his conversion and eventual success as a craft brewer...

“How do you make a small fortune racing? You start with a big one.” This cynical comment is tossed around in the racing world frequently. Uttered mostly by mechanics and pit crew members in the midst of a sweltering day at the track, it holds less weight than one might think given its conversational prominence at the track.
