.....May 15, 2023 .... ............. Keeping Fondren Fabulous

How should Fondren handle:

.....Vagrants, panhandlers, trespassers, homeless individuals and people in need?

.....Join our Coffee With Our Cops meeting next Monday, May 22 at 9 a.m. at Homewood Suites for a discussion led by our partner Stewpot and our law enforcement agencies on the appropriate responses to social issues that transcend into law enforcement issues. In addition to Stewpot, invited agencies include: Jackson Police Department, Capitol Police, UMMC Police and Fondren Business District Security.

.....The law enforcement panel will be open for all questions related to crime and enforcement.

.....Coffee and breakfast breads will be served.

.....Fondren Renaissance Foundation, in partnership with the League of Women Voters, has accepted two goals in advance of the upcoming 2023 elections: to increase voter registration by 10% to 5,159 and to achieve a 70% voter participation (2,832) in the primary (August 8) and general (November 7) elections.

.....In the coming weeks, the FRF Committee, led by Board Member Cathy Boone, will be compiling questions to submit to candidates for selected offices impacting Fondren. If you have a special question or area of interest you would like candidates to address, please email Cathy by Wednesday.

.....Fondren is comprised of the following Precincts: 14 (Fondren Presbyterian), 16 (Fondren Church), 37 (Boyd School) and 38 (Chastain School).

If you live or work in Fondren:

Tonight's party is for you!

.....You may have seen them at Fondren Live or in the holiday parade: blue hair and blue evening wear or t-shirts. They are the Ladies of SoFo. But they do so much more than make stunning appearances at Fondren events.

.....SoFo stands for: so fun, so fabulous, so not faux, so family, so convenient, so the place to live, SO FONDREN!

.....While SoFo is for women, twice a year, men are invited to celebrate Fondren, too, and tonight is one of those nights.

.....The party is from 6 - 8 p.m. at The Cedars. On the agenda is a welcome to the new SoFo leader, Susan Margaret Barrett Johnson.

.....If your last name starts with A- L, bring a beverage of your choice. If your last name starts with M - Z, bring a savory or sweet appetizer.

.....SoFo was started shortly after 9-11, 2001 with a two-fold mission: to create community and to spread the word about Fondren.

....."Following President George Bush's call for Americans to establish community, a group of six women - who love to talk, visit and get things done - gathered at a favorite bar to discuss how women could bolster this idea of community and spread the news about great things going on in Fondren," noted one of the founders Belmont Trapp. "At the time, there was no real mode of communication. Facebook wasn't invented until 2004. Websites were few. SoFo was created, emails gathered and we have been gathering since!"

Bring your Creativity to Fondren Live!

.....Join the market place at Fondren Live as a vendor in the parking lot of Trustmark Bank. The next opportunity to display and sell your wares is June 1, 5:30 p.m. until ....

.....JXNFlea curates the marketplace.

Request to be a vendor.

Trish Hammonds and sons DeWayne and Derek.

Hammonds a homeowner success story

.....Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area featured Fondren's Trish Hammonds recently as a success story on how home-ownership can change lives. Trish is the owner of Custom Optical in Woodland Hills Shopping Center.

.....Thanks to Habitat, Trish raised two sons in a Habitat home that she and her sons helped to build, and lived there happily for 18 years. When she sold her Habitat home, she was able to afford a larger house and pay for a partnership in her business. And, due to their experience in building their home, both sons have become successful building contractors.

.....HH and the YTs will headline the entertainment at June's Fondren Live at Highball Station, 6 - 9 p.m. Visit Highball Station to check out the new pizza oven and indoor bar and dining space!

Fondren Presbyterian Presents ...

"Rebuilding Jackson: problems vs potential"

.....Fondren Presbyterian will host its third in a series of discussions on current affairs in Mississippi on May 17. Dinner is served at 6:15 p.m. ($5 per person)- please make a reservation by Tuesday: 601-982-3232 or office@fondrenpcusa.org.

.....The discussion, "Rebuilding Jackson: The city's problems vs its potential" will begin at 7 p.m. The discussion will be led by Jake McGraw and and Alex Lawson.

A new business from the garbage crisis

.....You may remember Justin Ragin and Alexander Shaw, two entrepreneurial college friends from Jackson State who came to the rescue of many Fondren residents during the recent garbage crisis.

.....Ragin and Shaw were featured in the Clarion Ledger, and Ragin was quoted as saying "We just saw there was a need for this. It looked like there could be trash piling up around the area. So I just decided to do something."

.....Now that their garbage collection services are no longer needed, they have found a new opportunity and started a new business: T & C Cleaners. See their advertisement below.
