Delta Township Monthly News & Updates

Vol. 9 | Issue 6

2023

Here are some things to remember to help make your fireworks experience more enjoyable:

During the day on July 3, Sharp Park will be closed to motor vehicles. The Delta Township District Library parking lot will also be closed to vehicle traffic. There will be two entrances into Sharp Park, the main entrance from Elmwood Road, which will be open to pedestrian traffic and to vehicles holding a valid parking permit obtained from the Delta Township Parks & Recreation Department; and the second entrance will be at the west end of Sharp Park, at the East/West Pathway entry into the park. This entrance will be open to pedestrians and bicyclists for the majority of the day, however, from 9:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. the pathway through the park will be closed for safety reasons.

If you want to watch the display somewhere other than Sharp Park, there are several large parking lots in the vicinity for spectators such as the Lansing Mall, Meijer, and Target.

A permit is required for alcoholic beverages at Sharp Park and can be obtained through the Parks and Recreation Department at no charge through July 3, at 5:00 p.m. during regular business hours.

Fireworks, missile-like objects, weapons, or firearms that are not permitted by law are prohibited in Sharp Park. People entering Sharp Park will be subject to a visual inspection of their person, parcels, bags and containers, and clothing capable of carrying such items.

We would like to take this opportunity to emphasize safety in the use of fireworks and ask that citizens follow the state fireworks statute as we approach the 4th of July Holiday.

Delta Installs New Non-Verbal Communications Boards in Parks

We are excited to show off our new communication boards at Sharp Park and Mt. Hope Park! Communication boards are wonderful tools for non-verbal children and their friends and family.

One communication board was purchased with funds received from the "Play is Essential For All" grant through the mParks Michigan Recreation and Park Association Foundation. A second board was sponsored by the Xavier DeGroat Autism Foundation.

Thank you both for making Delta Township a wonderful place for all people to work, live, and play!

Join the Delta Township Saginaw Highway Corridor Improvement Authority (CIA) in planning for the future! Please help us by filling out a survey to identify what you like, don’t like, and areas of concern. We will use this information to help prioritize our next steps.

Grand Openings

A ribbon cutting was held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, to welcome a new Baskin Robbins to Delta Township. The new store is located at 619 N. Marketplace Blvd, Ste D in the Shops at Delta Township shopping center on Saginaw Highway. This is the third location in the portfolio of owners Tom and April English, who also have stores in Okemos and East Lansing. The new store is open from 10 am-10 pm Monday-Friday and 11 am-10 pm Saturday-Sunday.

Work continues on the Meijer store on Saginaw Highway across from the Lansing Mall, which is in the process of undergoing $13M in upgrades to the exterior façade and significant renovations to the interior layout. Most recently the eastern portion of the façade was revealed to show a modern look reflective of other Meijer locations in the region and the entrance was shifted to accommodate construction on the central portion of the building. The 222,000-square-foot Meijer store has been on Saginaw Highway in Delta Township since 1966 and has become a regional landmark thanks to the 14-foot-tall giraffe statue that sits on the roof of the adjacent Meijer gas station building. The renovation project began in March of 2023 and is expected to continue until early 2024.

A new Distracted Driving Law regarding cell phone use while operating a vehicle will goes into effect in the state of Michigan today. Below is a detailed message from the Michigan State Police outlining the new law.

How did we get here?

In early May, the Michigan House and Senate passed House Bills 4250, 4251, and 4252 to amend parts of the Michigan Vehicle Code in an effort to reduce distracted-driving crashes and fatalities. Texting while driving is already illegal in Michigan, but that law was instituted years ago when cell phones and their capabilities were much different. The new law now makes all hand-held cell phone usage illegal while driving.

What’s in the new law?

The bill amends Michigan law to make it illegal to “use a mobile electronic device to do any task, including, but not limited to” the following:

  • Send or receive a telephone call.
  • Send, receive, or read a text message.
  • View, record, or transmit a video.
  • Access, read, or post to a social networking site.

(Generally, using voice commands or hands-free modes to use mobile electronic devices is allowed.)
