America's Newspapers congratulates all of the winners and finalists of the 2023 Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism:

The Public Service Award was presented to The Associated Press, for the work of Mstyslav Chernov, Evgeniy Maloletka, Vasilisa Stepanenko and Lori Hinnant — for courageous reporting from the besieged city of Mariupol that bore witness to the slaughter of civilians in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“AP journalists have done courageous and important work in Ukraine throughout the war, shining a spotlight in particular on the human toll of the conflict,” said AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace. “From dispelling Russian misinformation to contributing to the creation of a humanitarian corridor, their work has been an incredible public service and we’re so pleased that it has been honored by the Pulitzer board.” Read more from AP

Finalists for the Public Service Award:
  • Austin American-Statesman, in collaboration with the USA TODAY Network — for its groundbreaking coverage of the Uvalde mass shooting. "The greatest respect we could show the Uvalde community and the families of those who lost their loved ones was to expose the failure by authorities and to hold those in power to account for their actions and words," Statesman Executive Editor Manny García said. "Our team is humbled and honored to be recognized by the Pulitzer judges and board for the most distinguished of honors: meritorious public service." Read more
  • The Washington Post — for its chronicling of the government failures that helped accelerate fentanyl deaths, creating the worst drug crisis in America. Read more

Honor your editorial writers and columnists with a Carmage Walls Commentary Prize nomination
Separate judging categories for small and large papers
$15,000 in cash prizes to be awarded
Honor your best editorial writers and columnists by nominating them for this year’s Carmage Walls Commentary Prize.

This contest is open to all members of America’s Newspapers — both daily and non-daily papers — and with circulation breakouts for smaller newspapers (under 35,000 circulation) and larger papers (over 35,000 circulation).

Editorials and columns will be judged separately — with one set of awards presented for excellence in editorial writing (representing the view of the newspaper) and another set of awards for excellence in column writing (columns written by one or more individuals).

In each of those contests, entries will be judged in two circulation brackets: over 35,000 circulation and under 35,000 circulation. And, three cash prizes will be included in each bracket — giving 12 individuals the opportunity to win cash prizes in 2023 (up from four cash prizes in 2022).

Cash prizes will be awarded in the following brackets:
·    Editorials (over 35,000 circulation)
·    Editorials (under 35,000 circulation)
·    Columns (over 35,000 circulation)
·    Columns (under 35,000 circulation)

Cash awards will be as follows in each of the four contest brackets: first-place, $2,250; second-place, $1,000; and third-place, $500. This puts total cash prizes at $15,000 — thanks to the generous support of Lissa Walls Cribb and Southern Newspapers, Inc.

In addition to the top three in each bracket, America's Newspapers also will be recognizing additional finalists.

This contest has always sought to recognize strong, courageous and positive editorial page leadership. Judges will be taking the courage it took to write the editorials or columns into highest consideration.
