Back 2 High School

Not for you, of course!

The school year has started strong, with incredible support and dedication to the journey ahead! We were thrilled to welcome the classes of ’25, ’26, ’27, and ’28—time flies, doesn’t it? This year promises to be rich with opportunities for growth, meaningful connections, and the discovery of new passions. All of this is made possible by our inspiring leaders, including dedicated alumni who serve as faculty and staff, continue to impact our community both professionally and personally. As former students themselves, they serve as powerful inspirations to those following in their footsteps.

Now, let’s highlight some of our alumni staff and recap the exciting events we’ve had so far!

10+ Years of Service Awards!

On October 24, Cristo Rey New York celebrated its 20th anniversary with the Access to Success Gala. The evening was filled with inspiring reflections and a strong sense of community. We highlighted staff and faculty members for their 10+ years of service to our mission as well as seven honorees who continuously play a huge role in shaping Cristo Rey New York High School.

HONOREES: William P. Ford, Rev. Joseph P. Parkes, S.J., Madeline Lacovara, Susan Braddock, Kyle L. Miller, William Cody, and Mark DeWaele, DMD.

FACULTY & STAFF AWARDS: Rose Batista, Sr. Jude Biank, Noemi Burgos, Natasha Cooper, Brendan Faughnan, Gladys Garcia, Connie Hackett, Kate Kostelc, Sr. Janice Kraft, Colleen Manfred, and Felix Mota.

Current senior Savannah shared her journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities that have helped her grow both academically and personally. Fellow senior Adrian spoke about his career aspirations and how Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Program has opened doors to new experiences. Alumni Michelle Gonzalez and Jeffrey Collado from the Class of 2008 also shared heartfelt stories, highlighting how Cristo Rey shaped their lives and careers.

Our New Dean, Ms. Nuñez '12

"My name is Soribel Nuñez but the current Cristo Rey Lions know me as either Ms. Nuñez or just Miss. I am a proud member of the Class of 2012! After graduating from Cristo Rey, I went off to Marist College (Go Red Fox!) where I double majored in Criminal Justice and Spanish with a double minor in Psychology and Latin American/Caribbean Studies. After graduating from Marist, I decided to pursue a career in education.

I am currently in my 8th year as an educator and I have loved every moment of it. Working with kids has been a true blessing and I have learned a lot throughout my years as an educator. Three years ago I came back to Cristo Rey NY to work as the Associate Dean of Students and this school year, I became the new Dean of Students at Cristo Rey NY. I am honored to be in this role as it affords me the opportunity to guide our students to become resilient and responsible young men and women. As an alumna working in CRNY, I get to share my experience as a student and use my experience to help students navigate being a high school student at CRNY. In addition, this year I chose to advance my education by enrolling in the school counseling master's program at Hunter College. This degree will help me further my understanding of the human experience and allow me to guide my students in the best way possible."

Opening Mass of the Holy Spirit

On September 6th, the Cristo Rey community gathered at St. Cecilia's Church to celebrate the beginning of the school year with the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit. This cherished tradition unites students, faculty, and staff in a moment of reflection, prayer, and togetherness as we embark on a new academic journey.

The celebration was further enhanced by the participation of student leaders, who participated as altar servers, readers, greeters, and gift-bearers. Following the Mass, we held an uplifting award ceremony to honor the achievements of the previous year, reminding everyone that our Lions are prepared for another year of excellence.

Ms. Tejada '10

Our Admissions and Community Engagement Director, Tiffany Tejada, a member of the Class of 2010, is entering her fifth year with a strong sense of optimism! Over the years, she has worked with Cristo Rey, and Tiffany has successfully recruited students from across all five boroughs, to join our alma mater, Cristo Rey New York. Through her expertise in promotion, marketing, and communication, she has welcomed many lions into our building. Tiffany created the CRNY tradition of Accepted Students Day and has also organized brunch for our younger prospective classmates. In her admissions role, she demonstrates her ability to take on multiple responsibilities across different departments, making her a remarkable leader who directs admissions and guides the school in an innovative direction.

CWSP Kick-Off!

Our second annual Corporate Work Study kickoff was a success! This event celebrated our students' upcoming placements for the new year and provided them with a valuable opportunity to meet their supervisors before starting their roles. The kickoff served as a vibrant reminder of the collaborative spirit that defines Cristo Rey New York as "the school that works."

Mr. Carcamo '16

Our Associate Director of the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP), Dishawn Carcamo, a graduate of the Class of 2016, is entering his third school year with remarkable dedication. He has consistently demonstrated his ability to guide students into the business world. Dishawn’s previous experience as a student has greatly benefited the Corporate Work Study Program. His responsibilities include overseeing daily operations and serving as a liaison between our partners and the students. Dishawn not only connects well with our students, but also implements changes that empower the next generation to excel. Along with Tiffany, he coordinated a successful kickoff event for CWSP. The business world can be particularly challenging for young adults to navigate, but Dishawn ensures that all students acquire the necessary skills for successful professional futures.

Clubs and Sports

CRNY Athletics had an impressive start to the year. On October 12th, the Cristo Rey New York Lions Boys Soccer team faced Cristo Rey Brooklyn for the first time in several years. Both teams played well, but the Lions proudly showed why “New York” is part of their name.

Just a few days later, on October 15th, the Cristo Rey Lions Girls Volleyball team participated in the 34th annual scrimmage, competing against various schools in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event had a fantastic turnout, with our team sporting new pink uniforms to honor the cause.

In addition to sports, we have more than 10 clubs available for our students. With options like Running Club every Friday, Chess Club on Wednesdays, and Music Club throughout the week, these extracurricular activities provide a glimpse into the enriching opportunities available at Cristo Rey.

Mr.Yaoda '19

"My name is Kanaan Yaoda, born and raised in Harlem and I am a Cristo Rey 2019 graduate. After high school, I continued studies at Le Moyne College where I immersed myself in the community as an Office Assistant at the Registrar's, a peer tutor at the Writing Center, an Associate Editor for Le Moyne's literary magazine, The Salamander, and even left my own personal legacy as the founding president of the Ali Boxing Club, which is currently thriving on the Le Moyne campus. After graduating with a BA in English Literature, I found myself back at my alma mater as a College Counselor, where I've had the opportunity to give back to the community that had a massive hand in shaping me into the capable individual that I am today. I offer counseling, guidance, and support to our students, and ultimately do my part in ensuring each and every Cristo Rey student is accepted to an affordable four-year institution that matches their interests and needs. It is extremely fulfilling work, and I am proud to be a small part of each student's journey."

Hispanic Heritage Month

Que VIVA!

On Saturday October 19th, Cristo Rey New York celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with our Pioneros de Cambio Gala!

The event was filled with songs, poems, and dances. We even had a sketch based on the story of Galvarino. It was a wonderful event in which staff, students and families came together to celebrate our diverse roots.

Ms. Salazar '15

Bianca, from the Class of 2015, is entering the upcoming school year with creativity! As an Admissions Associate, she brings a unique balance of logistics and communication skills, seamlessly managing details while warmly engaging with prospective families. Bianca adds a creative spin to her role by effectively marketing the school’s values and vision, as well as helping future students and families. Her commitment and talent make her an incredibly valuable team member at Cristo Rey, and she’s excited to make this year the best yet!

Ms. Cortes '15

Anahi, our Religion teacher from the Class of 2015, is excited to kick off an inspiring school year! As the first alum to join CRNY’s faculty, she brings incredible dedication and a unique perspective. Anahi is known for her hardworking spirit, her attentive listening, and the constant encouragement she offers to everyone around her. She teaches seniors 7 Sacraments & World Religion and Juniors Catholic Social Teachings, 7 Sacraments & Morality. On top of everything she creates meaningful space for alums and students. We’re thrilled to have her making a positive impact every day!

Ms. Orozco '19

Skyla is entering the new year with a spirit of passion! In her Advancement role, she’s created new opportunities for alumni to showcase their accomplishments, launched reunions, and introduced fresh traditions for her fellow alums. These include quarterly alumni articles, throwback posts, and exclusive invitations to major events. Skyla has made impressive strides in enhancing her marketing skills for the Development department and is excited to keep up the momentum. And by the way, she created this highlight for all the alumni working at CRNY—oh hey everyone!
