Program Spotlight: Career Education Center
The Career Education Center (CEC) serves Ventura County grade 11 and 12 students at its site at the Camarillo Airport. Students come to the CEC for high-quality CTE programs that prepare students for post-secondary studies in career fields and/or to move directly into the workforce. Hands-on internships are a highlight and enhance instruction by providing students with experience in a business or industry setting. Students greatly benefit from a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. Shirley St. Clair of Royal High School says, "I chose to be in the Certified Nurse Assistant program because I want to be an RN and this is a pathway to do that as well as get a license and hands-on experience." Automotive student Matthew Lares of Pacifica High School recommends CEC programs because "You expand your knowledge, and you have the opportunity to get a career in the field you choose." Students develop solid employment skills, and these internship opportunities often lead to full-time employment.

Course offerings include Advanced Naval Technologies, Auto Structural Repair & Refinishing, Auto Technology, Aviation/Unmanned Aerial Systems, Certified Nurse Assistant, Dental Assistant, Medical Assistant, Veterinary Assistant, Manufacturing, and Welding. Students who would like to register for classes should meet with their high school counselor to ensure the class is part of the student’s educational plan.

Industry Spotlight: The Science Classroom & Careers in Neuroscience
Rapid technological advances in the field of neuroscience have revolutionized the study of the brain and the treatment of disorders affecting human behavior and cognition. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field that includes clinical and research careers (e.g. lab technicians, research scientists and assistants, health educators, clinical psychologists, physician's assistants, neurosurgeons, and neurologists).

The NeuroLab program hosted by Coastal Marine Biolabs (CMB) enables science teachers to bring neuroscience into their classrooms. This program, which is rooted in 30 years of clinical and basic neuroscience research, provides a unique opportunity for teachers to collaborate with biomedical scientists during 9-day PD institutes. The experiences will prepare teachers to guide their students through a model-building mission that highlights the interdisciplinary nature of science, the interplay between clinical and basic neuroscience research, and the importance of big data in modern scientific inquiry. Teachers who participate in the program will receive comprehensive curriculum materials to support classroom instruction.

The NeuroLab team is now recruiting 11th and and 12th grade teachers to participate in 9-day summer institute hosted from July 31-August 8, hosted at the CMB lab in the Ventura Harbor.
