Happy National First Responders Day
Today, we honor the brave men and women who risk their lives everyday in times of crisis. Be sure to take a moment today to thank and show appreciation to our local law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, beach patrol, emergency management, and code enforcement officers for their heroic acts of selflessness.
Holiday Public Safety Message and Tips
The Holidays are approaching which entails an extensive amount of shopping for most. Online shopping during the holiday season-or at any time of year-should always be done with caution. According to research conducted by the Nebraska Department of Justice, there was a total of 59,177 scams reported in the state of South Carolina last year. We encourage all residents to be proactive and become familiarized with the following tips below to protect yourself:

  • Keep ALL software up-to-date.
  • Utilize strong passwords.
  • Make sure your internet connection is secure.
  • Customize and use privacy settings when using social media.
  • ALWAYS make sure your Internet connection is secure. Most public Wi-Fi is not. Refrain from making online purchase while connected to public Wi-Fi.
  • Take advantage of using a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your information when browsing.
  • Only make online purchases from secure websites.
  • Customize and use privacy settings on all social media platforms.
  • Identify and block nuisance calls manually or automatically.
  • Be wary of requests to update or confirm your personal information.
  • Do not open attachments from unknown senders or click on links in emails/unknown text messages in which personal information is requested.

For more safety tips on how to protect yourself and your identity this holiday season, please email TOKI's Director of Public Safety, Dr. Craig Harris, at charris@kiawahisland.org.

Predicted King Tides for October 2022
A "King Tide" is a non-scientific term used to describe the highest seasonal tides which occur every year. Charleston's average high tide range is about 5.5 ft., but during a King Tide event, it can reach 7 ft. or higher. King Tides are naturally occurring tides that are caused by a spring tide (when the earth, sun, and moon align during a new or full moon, increasing tide ranges) corresponding to the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to the earth, which is known as perigee.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, we can expect to see King Tides on October 26-28.

Sam Bush
Saturday, November 12, 2022
West Beach Conf. Center | 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $15 (tickets required)

There was only one prize-winning teenager carrying stones big enough to say thanks, but no thanks to Roy Acuff. Only one son of Kentucky finding a light of inspiration from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys and catching a fire from Bob Marley and The Wailers. Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators, rolling out the New Grass revolution, and then leaving the genre’s torch-bearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak. There is only one consensus pick of peers and predecessors, of the traditionalists, the rebels, and the next gen devotees. Music’s ultimate inside outsider. Or is it outside insider? There is only one Sam Bush.
