Our Lady of Mount Carmel School

Golden Cross Award Recipients for October

Cai Mahan and John Wendt

The Golden Cross Award is presented to two students a month who exemplify our school motto to be “Stewards for Christ” by using all the gifts that God has given to them, both natural and supernatural, in service to God and others.

The Golden Cross, which these students wear throughout the month, is the greatest symbol of the love Jesus has for us, and His mission, which he expressed in the words “I did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many.” It is Jesus that we seek to imitate through a life of grace and virtue. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

After careful consideration of all nominations submitted, Cai Mahan and John Wendt were chosen to receive the Golden Cross Award. Please find here the nominations for both students:

Cai Mahan shows the virtue of thoughtfulness. He is always the first one to clap or cheer when someone does something well. When someone messes up, he is also the first one to encourage them. He wants everyone to feel happy.

John Wendt shows the virtues of kindness, reverence, and respect. He is so kind to others and is always so reverent at mass and respectful in the classroom. He is very respectful to teachers and others, and always puts others before him. He is positive and never complains about anything and is a good sport when we play games. I have never heard him say anything bad about anyone else.

Lunches on Nov 11 & Nov 17 - Nut-Free Please:

We have 2 times this month that we ask the students to have lunch in their classrooms instead of the Cafeteria. On these days we want to remind everyone that page 42 of the Family Policy Guide states

"On the rare occasion that students need to eat lunch in their classrooms, the school office will notify parents asking them to provide a nut-free lunch for their child that day."

These dates are as follows:

Friday, Nov 11: The Merciful H.E.L.P. Center will be using the Parish Hall to set up for their huge Thanksgiving basket give-away on Saturday. Many of the school children assist with setting up and distributing food items throughout the school day. This is such a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about helping others.

There will still be pizza this Friday. Students that ordered pizza will go to the cafeteria to get their pizza order and return to the classroom to eat.

Thursday, Nov 17: The 1st grade is bringing back their Thanksgiving Feast! Many of you may recall that this used to be held in the lower level of the church. Due to the current construction, they will be using the Cafeteria instead. The plan for lunch that day:

Full Day KG - will still eat in the Cafeteria

Grades 2-6 will eat in their classrooms.

We will need some parent volunteers to help us supervise lunches in the classrooms so the teachers can still have their much deserved break. If your protocol is current and you are interested in helping during lunch on Nov 17, please email Amy Quinn at amyquinn27@gmail.com.

Wellness Policy Reminder:

While we are talking about school lunches, please keep in mind the school wellness policy (pgs 39-41 of the Family Policy Guide). We have seen an increase in candy and sugary snacks in the cafeteria recently. While some of this is expected after Halloween, we thought this would be a good time for this reminder.

Friday, Nov 11 - wear Red, White & Blue

In honor of Veteran's Day, next Friday, Nov 11 will be a Charity Dollar Jeans Day.  Anyone that brings in a $1 donation, may wear jeans with any appropriate red, white and blue shirt.

No accessories please.

On out of uniform days:

  • Children may wear loose-fitting jeans, athletic pants, khakis or other clean, casual type slacks with appropriate tops.
  • No shorts may be worn.
  • T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. may be worn, but they must be appropriate to the Catholic environment of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School.
  • It is permissible for girls to wear a casual skirt on out of uniform days, as long as the skirt follows the guidelines for uniform skirts and the hem touches the top of the knee or longer. They may also wear Capri pants (mid-calf).
  • For safety reasons Crocs, flip flops, or shoes that do not stay securely on the feet are not permitted.

All money raised will go to the Indianapolis Honor Flight Program. This is a non-profit, volunteer run organization that works to honor our nation's veterans with an all-expenses paid trip to the memorials in Washington, D.C. The Honor Flight is a one day trip that many of our veterans may not otherwise be able to take.

This program has ties to the Our Lady of Mount Carmel community. First grade teacher, Sue McClure was a guardian for her father Larry Moran, who was in the US Navy during the Korean War. The pair traveled to Washington, D.C. in 2016 alongside almost 90 other veterans. Mrs. McClure is now an active volunteer for Indy Honor Flight, most recently being a bus captain in October for 22 Vietnam Veterans.

Mrs. McClure was also a volunteer for the May 2022 Honor Flight and she helped welcome home US Navy Vietnam Veteran, Ted Johnson, grandfather of 4th grade student George Hauser. Mr. Johnson flew with George's mom Jenny as his guardian and almost 90 other veterans. Mrs. Fox's 3B classroom all wrote letters to Mr. Johnson thanking him for his service. The surprise letters were given to him during the Honor Flight's "Mail Call," which is one of the highlights of the trip, representing when the Veterans would receive mail from home while they were overseas serving their country. US Army Vietnam Veteran Kenneth Meier experienced his Honor Flight last June. He was warmly welcomed home at a huge surprise homecoming, which is the close of each Honor Flight. His grandkids, Abigail, 3rd grade, Luke, 6th grade and John Paul, 1st grade of OLMC welcomed their hero home.

For many of these veterans, the Honor Flight is the first time they have been to Washington, D.C. to see their memorials and be celebrated for their service and sacrifice. It gives veterans the chance to share this momentous trip with other veterans, to remember friends and comrades lost and share their stories and experiences with each other. This program is nationwide. If you know a veteran that served during WWII, Korea of Vietnam, please click HERE (https://www.honorflight.org/map.html) to find your local Honor Flight Hub. For more information on Indy Honor flight, click HERE (https://indyhonorflight.org/). Thank you for all your donations on Friday!

We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they walk by.”

Thanks again to all the amazing Room Parents who made Halloween extra fun with some great Fall Parties last week. I heard a lot of fun stories about all the silly games and cute crafts that were done.

Veterans Day is right around the corner and this year we would like to take a moment to honor some of the Veterans in our own lives. If you have a family member or friend who served in the Military, we would LOVE for you to send in a small picture and brief description of their service. Place the items in an envelope labeled “PTO Veterans Board” and send in with your student. We will be placing these on a bulletin board in the Parish Hall during November as a way to show our gratitude for their service.

The 5th Grade Social is coming up next Friday! Please contact Sarah Sansone if you are interested in helping

Notes From the Nurse:

Jaclyn and Emily coming to you with some important Health Information:

  1. Cold and Flu Season is here! Just a reminder that students need to stay home with a fever over 100 degrees or higher, vomiting, or diarrhea. They may return to school 24 hours after symptoms resolve, including fever-free with no medication for 24 hours.
  2. To prevent illness, please have your children pack healthy snacks and lunches and wash hands frequently!
  3. We have been working hard on our school’s vaccine compliance with state laws.

a. Indiana Code 20-34-4-5 states that each school shall require parents

to provide proof of student immunization status no later than the first

day of school attendance. Students who fail to comply with required

school immunizations at the conclusion of this period and who do not

have a medical or religious exemption on file or other documentation

indicating the immunizations are in progress are not in compliance

with state law. Written documentation of exemptions must be provided each school year.

This has the potential to help OLMC  qualify for grand prize rewards of up to $2,500! For every 20 kits requested, OLMC will receive $50.....

So far: Our Lady of Mount Carmel School has reached 10 Energy Kits and has saved 2000 kWh of energy.

Used Vehicle donations to the Merciful HELP Center
The Merciful HELP Center is in great need of used cars for families in need.
We have a fast growing list of people who are without cars going into the winter season and we would like to help them if we can. This need is serious and if you donate a running used car you will be able to provide a family the chance to grocery shop, get to doctor appointments and work on a daily basis.
Please email Todd Wade - twade757@gmail.com for more information.
Thanks to PFM Car and Truck in Carmel and the Neely family, we are able to make repairs to cars on occasion! Todd can help navigate the decision if your vehicle would be a great fit for a family in need! Thank you to all who have made a vehicle donation!
