Greetings Area 12!
It's June! And that means for many of us, Summer Vacation! We'll reconnect with friends and family, and maybe do some sight-seeing, camping, or overseas travel. There's also an opportunity for you to reconnect with your handbell community! Area 12 will be holding its Biennial Meeting of the Membership on Saturday, July 2, at 11:30 am Pacific Time. If you're joining us for Bells on the Beach in San Clemente, you can attend in person, and we will also have a virtual option available for folks to attend from afar. We always want to hear from our membership, to keep you all informed, and to hear about how we can better support you! Stay tuned for more information on how to attend.

Happy ringing!

Stevie Berryman and Barb Walsh, Clinicians

We are just about a month away from dipping our toes into the cool blue ocean at one of San Clemente’s fine beaches and then ringing our hearts out at Bells on the Beach. There are still a few spaces available—youth are especially encouraged to register! You will have a fantastic time working with Barb Walsh. And even if the massed ringing does fill up, we have director/observer spots available, and you will be able to take part in all the classes and learn some of those valuable rehearsal techniques from the clinicians to get your ringers to the next level.

If you are coming to Bells on the Beach, the June Bell Table Talks are for you: June 5 at 3 pm and June 7 at 7:00 pm.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sharon Guilliams at LAMetro.Area12@handbellmsucians.org. Where else can you be assigned to the Trestles Beach Handbell Choir? (You’ll have to come to the event to see what that is all about.)
Don’t forget to order your awesome conference T-shirts. Rumor has it that if you come to the conference with jeans and white converse tennies as shown in the picture you will get a prize!! Also, the shirts don’t have a specific place or year listed, so if it is your dream to play “bells on the beach,” these shirts are for you.

Be sure to check out Sharon’s LA Metro article below if you want to see who will be playing in the Showcase Concert and the Conference Final Concert.
Bells on the Beach is sponsored by Handbell Musicians of America, dedicated to uniting people through the musical art of handbell and handchime ringing.
Next Area 12 Board Meeting: September 2022
Secretary’s Report
With the cancellation of Red, White and Bells, your board has been very active to trying to reach out to the handbell community to find out what types of events you would like to see in the future. At our last meeting we assigned ourselves 56 (!) action items, a few having to do with routine board activities, but most having to do with reaching out to the members of Area 12 and working on find new and different ways to schedule events that will excite and encourage the members of Area 12.

We recognize a lot of choirs have changed dramatically as we come out of the COVID pandemic. My home church went from 12 to 8 ringers, and we consider ourselves lucky—we hear of many churches that are smaller than that. But those that remain are making it work, and we as a board want to support you in whatever format your group is now.

We have Area 12 meetings coming up. Our next traditional board meeting will be the afternoon of Saturday, June 4. As part of Bells on the Beach in San Clemente, we are scheduling our Biennial Area meeting. We encourage you to attend in person if you will be joining us in San Clemente. As always, if you have something you would like to present to, or discuss with, the board, or even better, would like to join the board, please reach out to any one of us.

Are you one of the 70 folks who did not renew this Spring? Please consider renewing this week.

If you don't plan on renewing, would you please drop me an email at membership.area12@handbellmusicians.org (or your Regional Coordinator) to let us know why. It is helpful to know the reasons as we make future plans.

Thanks!

Hi there, SoCal–
The "handbell season" is ending soon for many of us. My church bell choir is doing something different for our big end of year event. Instead of having our usual "Music Appreciation Sunday" -- in which both the Chancel Choir and the bell choir play multiple pieces during the service -- we are instead having "A Celebration of the Holy Spirit featuring the Trinity Ringers" on June 5, Pentecost Sunday. (Our Chancel Choir has not yet started meeting again, though we are hopeful they will be able to this fall.) I got to design the service along with our pastor and I'm really excited about it. It is my sincere hope that it brings blessings to all of our congregation, both in-person and via livestream. (If any of you would like to watch the livestream -- either that day or after -- please let me know & I will send you the link.)
But just because the season is "over" doesn't mean that we can't still ring bells! Take a look at the "Bells on the Beach" event happening July 1-3 in San Clemente. While the ringing spots are almost full, we do still have an option for a "Director/Observer" to register. D/O's will be able to take any of the classes we offer, as well as observe the massed and divisional rehearsals. I know I always find it fascinating and educational to watch how other directors run rehearsals; maybe you would, too? One more thing: we will always make room for youth to ring at this event! So if you are a youth, or know of any youths who might like to attend, please do NOT hesitate to register or encourage others to register. There WILL be a place for you!

My best,
-Michèle

Hello LA Metro,

By the time you read this, most likely, Bells on the Beach will only have Youth and Director/Observer spots available. However, LA Metro, you can show your support to Area 12, by coming to one of the fantastic concerts we have planned. Friday Night performers include Linda Krantz, St. John’s Ensemble, and Tintabulations from Reno, Nevada. Sunday Night performers include Area 12’s Bells on the Beach participants (Youth, Division A/B, Division C and Massed Ring) as well as appearances by a Concordia Irvine Ensemble, Cyndi Tully and Michèle Sharik, and Derek Nance and Sam Strasser. A free will offering will be taken at each concert. Come and support this conference while it is in your neck of the woods.
Monday evenings in June there will be “pick up” rehearsals for the conference music in San Clemente. If interested, shoot me an email.

Last call to complete the LA Metro Event Survey—this will inform our decisions of what events happen here. To those that have completed the survey, thank you. Even if you don’t live in the LA Metro area, you can complete the survey, just be honest about where you live.

Hope to see you soon,
Sharon

A fall festival is a great way to jump start your ringing season. There will be MASSED RINGING and a FINAL CONCERT open to the public. In between those two offerings will be CLASSES such as Weaving, Christmas on the Bell Tree with plenty of bell tree music to purchase onsite, Handchimes, Drumming, Games and Dance, Small Ensemble Ringing, Revving Up to the Red Zone, and a Reading Session playing through new music and the opportunity to purchase that music onsite. Great class clinicians will be presenting these classes: Barb Walsh, Julie Hunziker, Ben Brown, Melanie Grabor, Keith Mockford, Mary Balkow, and Lois Nichols.

Howdy!
Well, our 20th Annual Sierra Spring Ring was a big success! All 39 of us from 6 different groups REALLY enjoyed getting together to ring, take classes, and especially to socialize! Tintab is looking forward to next year's event and would LOVE to have feedback as to what you'd like the event to look like! Please contact me with any ideas you might have. See you next year!

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?

Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.

To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
