LOIS SCHMIDT RETIRES

A career of helping people and organizations matter

LOIS SCHMIDT - Director of Development

Lois was invited to come aboard Project Turnabout’s growing organization in 2014. “We were building new spaces, and I was pretty much in awe that I got asked to help, so I dug in and started writing grant proposals and inviting donors,” she says. “Pretty soon that was in our rearview, and I was working in my brand new office along with the PTAB Leadership Team helping to make more dreams happen – this time a sober house for women and strengthening our presence in Willmar. And the projects and events continued on after that. Never a dull moment, as they say.”

Our conversation with Lois then took a turn toward the “exit interviews” we do with discharging patients – and in which Lois also facilitated from time to time. In the interviews patients are invited to tell us about their “ah ha” and their “not-so-great” moments while here. Lois came up with these:

"People's resilience is just, well, amazing."

"Turnabout has a fitness center. And they let me use it!"

"My job at PTAB has been to inspire people to give. I surely witnessed that here in my 8 years."

The disease of addiction is hard; it’s seriously difficult, and it’s impossible for me to put into words what I saw and learned here. At the same time, people’s resilience is just, well, amazing. This brand of resilience and hope in people who struggle here are also things I can’t describe the way they deserve to be described. I’ll leave it at that.

I just loved being a part of making the Willmar women’s sober home project (Cheri’s Place) come true. It was purely and simply an adventure that I will never forget. Every single detail; the people and the experiences; ups and downs; all stories-within-stories that I get to keep in my heart.

Turnabout has a fitness center. And they let me use it! We also have Kick Back Fridays every First-Friday of the month, featuring Carl’s Bakery donuts. One time I took 3. What was I thinking?!

My job at PTAB has been to inspire people to give. I surely witnessed that here in my 8 years. Staff give and give – and I’m not just talking about money. They are working in a job that compares with few others. Like I said earlier. the disease of addiction is hard. Asking for money – sure I got plenty of turndowns, but what matters is all the “yes’s” and the generosity. It’s been pretty great.

"What matters is all the “yes’s” and the generosity."

-Lois Schmidt

Retirement for Lois means more time with her 4 grandchildren; the oldest graduating high school next year and the youngest starting kindergarten, being there for her 90-year old mom, digging out her college Spanish textbooks to see where that can go, and giving her car a much-needed rest.

Congratulations Lois!
