Mourns the Passing of Founder & Past Board Member
Sister Chandru Desai

It is with deep sadness that the San Francisco Interfaith Council has learned of the passing of Sister Chandru Desai, Director of the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center in San Francisco & Anubhuti Retreat Center in Novato, California. Sister Chandru was one of the founding members of United Religions Initiative, the San Francisco Interfaith Council and the Interfaith Center at the Presidio. Her deep spirituality and profound presence conveyed an aura of peace to all she encountered.

We extend heartfelt condolences to the Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center community and share the following obituary that includes information related to the scheduled funeral and memorial services.

1948 - 2022
"Brahma Kumaris Sister Chandru Desai passed away on May 31st at the University of San Francisco, California Hospital after suffering a stroke on Wednesday, 25th May. She was 73 years old. Her funeral will be held on Sunday June 5th.

Sister Chandru Desai was born in August, 1948 in the city of Mumbai, India. She started her spiritual life with Brahma Kumaris in 1964. Her practice and teaching of Raja Yoga Meditation and spiritual knowledge spanned nearly six decades.

During her early years as a yogi, she traveled extensively in India, arranging and attending spiritual conferences and teaching meditation. From 1972 to 1975, she lived in Africa and was instrumental in setting up centers of the university in African nations, including Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya. In 1975, spiritual service led her to Canada, where she established centers in Vancouver and Toronto. In 1978, she was instrumental in starting the first U.S. center in San Antonio, Texas. Today, there are more than 35 BK centers in the United States.

Sister Chandru was Vice President of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization, USA and was responsible for administering numerous Brahma Kumaris centers in the Western region of the United States.

In the Bay Area, she has been the Director of the San Francisco Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center since 1979 and the Director of the Anubhuti Retreat Center in Novato, California since 2007.

Sister Chandru is one of the founding members of United Religions Initiative, the San Francisco Interfaith Council, and the Interfaith Center at the Presidio.

Her purity, love, honesty, spiritual power, dedication to the Divine and His Task continues to inspire many to lead their lives on the spiritual path."
