Happy New Year CCTS Community,
It is an honor and privilege to begin the new year back at my alma mater and lead The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) as Director and Principal Investigator (PI) of the NIH CTSA grant. I spent my first 3 months at Ohio State learning about the institution and its people, the CCTS and our CTSA grant. We will be conducting a strategic planning process in 2024 and I look forward to engaging as many of you as possible as we define our vision and future goals.
By means of introduction, I spent the last 25 years on the faculty at the University of Florida (UF), an institution that is very similar to Ohio State in terms of size and scope. I served in a number of leadership roles at UF, including center director, department chair, director of the UF Health Precision Medicine Program, and most recently as Dean of the College of Pharmacy (from 2013-2022). I spent part of my post-dean sabbatical working with NIH’s All of Us program.
In terms of research, I have had continuous competitive extramural funding since 1990, focused on cardiovascular clinical pharmacology and pharmacogenomics and implementation of precision medicine approaches into clinical practice. I have substantial experience with multiple funding mechanism types, including multiple NIH U01 grants, along with securing a new T32.
I see my new role at Ohio State as a perfect blend of my clinical/translational research career and my leadership experiences. I personally have benefitted tremendously from the CTSA (and predecessor GCRC) grants at the academic institutions where I served, and can’t quite picture what my career would look like had those resources not been available, especially early in my career. I am therefore deeply committed to advancing clinical and translational science at Ohio State and supporting the next generation of clinical and translational scientists.
Dr. Becky Jackson left behind an amazing gift that is the CCTS, and I am to work with all of you to further elevate our impact. I’m excited for what 2024 has in store for us and look forward to our collective efforts taking us to new heights.

What's New in Translational Science?
|
For people hospitalized with COVID-19, two new risk-prediction tools, tested in part using the NCATS National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), could help clinicians make faster, better treatment decisions. The tools use a patient’s age and five common lab tests to analyze their risk of death more rapidly and accurately.

The CCTS is calling for applications to the Predoctoral T32 Mentored Research Training Program, appointment date August 16, 2024.
The T32 program provides full-time research training support for post-candidacy predoctoral trainees pursuing mentored clinical and translational research or clinical and translational science who are enrolled in any Ohio State graduate degree program. Health-professional doctorate trainees who are enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral program (such as MPH or MD/PhD program) are also eligible to apply.
Join us for a Information Session about the T32:
When: January 25, 2024, 9 - 10 a.m. EST
Where: Online

To facilitate innovative research, the CCTS will award vouchers to Ohio State and Nationwide Children's Hospital investigators worth up to $3,000. To support new collaborations, the CCTS will award Ohio State and Nationwide Children's Hospital investigators up to $5,000 for projects involving researchers from two different colleges or institutions.
The voucher program is open through July 31, 2024, and processes applications on a rolling basis.

We are soliciting input from the university community to inform CCTS decisions for priority research areas across The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children's Hospital.
The goal of the CCTS Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies program is to support existing or nascent translational research scientific teams performing studies that address barriers limiting research translation and have the potential to impact research beyond their specific research area (i.e., translational science).
The Annual Pilot Theme Survey will be open through Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Applications are now being accepted for a unique three-year postdoctoral fellowship, offered jointly by NCATS and the FDA. Fellows train at both the NCATS internal research labs and the Food and Drug Administration and develop their skills in both preclinical translational science and regulatory science.
ConsentTools helps clinical research professionals understand and adopt evidence-informed practices for informed consent in clinical trials. These practices assess and improve participant understanding of clinical trial information, and assist professionals in appointing legally authorized representatives (LARs) when necessary.
Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute, in collaboration with the Trial Innovation Network, has launched a call for Design Lab proposals. We are looking for investigators interested in pursuing innovative clinical effectiveness trial design.
Two investigator teams will be selected to take part in an expert consultation leading to a Design Lab event that brings together stakeholders from across the treatment development pathway.
