Greetings!
For the past five years, TROY School has partnered with the Community Foundation of Whitley County, The Center for Whitley County Youth and Whitley County Home School Coalition to participate in ACTS, a youth philanthropy pod. ACTS is an acronym for ACHIEVING CHANGES THROUGH STUDENTS and their mission is to educate students about philanthropy and area nonprofit organizations and also to develop leadership skills. Over the years, the group has visited BABE of Whitley County, Giving Gardens, Mission 25 Community Center at Miami Village, Toys for Tots, Impact Center and Passages Creative Learning Center. The ACTS group meets one afternoon per month where students and facilitators dig deeper into the work of area nonprofit organizations and, together, they brainstorm projects or activities they could do to assist the organizations in their missions. After several months of brainstorming the students narrow down their ideas and choose one organization to partner with and embark on putting their ideas into action. Past projects have included providing new bedding and toiletry items for Mission 25, hosting a picnic and outdoor activities for Passages clients, and putting together care packages for the Whitley County Dazzlers before one of their away competitions. This year, ACTS will be supporting Giving Gardens with a delicious snow cone project that our taste buds cannot wait until summer to try !
The ACTS program provides TROY School students with a view of Whitley County they most likely would never experience on their own, educates them about community resources, and provides them with an avenue to give back to their community. Current ACTS member and TROY School student, Daryan Austin, shared that he enjoys being part of ACTS because he has learned about the wide variety of programs in our county that focus on helping others. He feels that this community has been there to support and help him and he is thankful that through ACTS he can give back and make a difference.
