Happy Summer Solstice!
Paul and I joined hundreds of others for a sunset solstice at the Sunwheel at UMASS Amherst last week. Majestic stones stand proudly in a circle. They align on the horizon with our rising and setting sun four times a year at each solstice and equinox. The brainchild of the late Judy Young, PhD (an astrophysicist, astronomer, and daughter of an astronomer), the sculpturesque boulders map the night sky like a mini version of Stonehenge. I learned about the orbit we make around the sun, about where the sun rises and sets each day, and how the sun's path is precisely predictable across the year.
I thought about what is central in our lives? What do we build our lives around? What are we tracking? What are the trajectories we create by the priorities we make, the relationships we nurture, the way we spend our time? We know so much about how lifestyle habits and healthy relationships of all kinds improve health outcomes and.....and how it's not astrophysics! We all do best when we figure out our central guiding values and aspirations, and over time, orchestrate a life that orbits around those suns, doing our best to head off any interference with our own healthy trajectories!

Changes in Both Prostate Cancer Options and Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations

Major changes have been recommended related to screening and treatment for two of our most common cancers. Men with early, local prostate cancer can now opt for active surveillance instead of aggressive treatment, and the age for screening mammograms has been rolled back to 40 from a relative recent recommendation of 50. Let’s review each of these findings, which are pertinent to so many of us and our loved ones.
The American Urological Association review of prostate cancer is clear: if you are diagnosed with localized prostate cancer you will not increase your survival rate with surgical removal of the prostate or radiation to the area compared with “active surveillance” with laboratory testing including PSA, imaging, and repeat prostate biopsy at suggested interludes.

If you’re in a rush, this one is quick!
You'll need:
2 cans of beans of your choice, I love cannellini beans, black or red beans; alternately, 2 cups of cooked beans you have on hand, drained
½ red or white onion minced
I carrot cut into small pieces
I stalk celery cut into small pieces
2 hands full of whatever greens you have on hand
½ cup olive oil
Juice of one lemon
Salt & pepper to taste
