Celebrating Your Own Sainthood!

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of All Saints,

but have you ever stopped to think about your own "Sainthood"?

...that day in the future when you will enter

into the Communion of the Saints?

Join Chad as he leads us through a conversation

about practical considerations for the planning

of the ultimate celebration of your life (aka your funeral)

as well as other practical considerations

for end-of-life transitions.

It's a topic that some are afraid to approach,

but Chad promises to make it interesting and fun -

and doing this work ahead of time

can be a true gift to your family and loved ones.

We'll gather at around 11:30 am in the Nave.

Children's Formation for

Children Age 3 - Grade 5

Instead of Sunday School being either before or after worship, children are invited to gather together during the time of the Sermon and the Prayers of the People for a special story or activity that is tailored just for them. Children will come to worship with their families and will be invited to process out for this special time during the signing of a hymn. They will then return at the Passing of the Peace to join their families and the congregation for Communion.

All 3 year olds through 5th graders are welcome to join us. Older children are welcome as helpers and younger children may join with a parent, grandparent, or other caregiver.

If you have questions, please contact Molly Graves at mgraves@stbedes.org.

New Memorial Entrance Sculpture

When you arrive at the church building, you may notice a new welcome sculpture that has been installed above the main entrance doors. A "welcome sculpture" was planned as part of a future phase of the campus master plan after the exterior siding replacement project had been completed.

The new sculpture has been given as a memorial to long-time St. Bede's member Jim Barton by his loving spouse Nancy Bruce. The artist of the new sculpture is Ann Cowperthwaite - the same artist who created our beautiful star cross that hangs above the altar.

Join us this Sunday at 10 am

as we dedicate this new Memorial Welcome Sculpture.

Amethyst Baroque Concert

Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 7:00 pm

St. Bede’s Episcopal Church

Amethyst Baroque Ensemble begins its sixth season as one of the most active Baroque chamber ensemble in the Atlanta area.

A wonderful way to awaken a musician’s curiosity is to introduce them to an obscure composer. Discovering lesser-known pieces by the great masters of Baroque music can be fun, too, as Amethyst Baroque brings together a program of these ‘seldom play’d’ cantatas, sonatas, and more. From Schickhart’s L’Alphabet de la Musique to the suites of Roland Marais, Amethyst Baroque looks deep in the music library for tunes you may have never heard.

$20 donation is suggested; $10 for discounted categories; no one turned away due to inability to pay.

Popcorn Theology

"Barbie"

Saturday, November 16th

5:30—8:45 pm

Following a simple meal of pizza, a salad bar, fresh fruit and homemade cookies and popcorn (gluten free and dairy free options will be available), we’ll watch "Barbie,” a comedy starring Margot Robbie as stereotypical Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. There is a suggested donation of $10 for dinner.

This film is on Spirituality & Practice's list of the most spiritually literate films of 2023. The film is at times funny, and at other times a poignant story of Barbie and Ken leaving the world of Barbie Land and discovering the joys and perils of life in the real world. We see Barbie waking up to herself and to life beyond the little "perfect" life she has been living. She is helped to wake up by "weird" Barbie (Kate McKinnon), President Barbie (Issa Rae), the person who has been playing with her, Gloria (America Ferrara) as well as by her creator, Ruth Handler (Rhea Perlman). Directed by Greta Gerwig, this film explores the ways in which women have been taught to remain "asleep" and to be "perfect" and invites all of us—including Ken--to grow and to be more fully alive.

PG-13

about 1 hour and 48 minutes (minus the credits)

After watching the movie, we will have a brief conversation about where we saw and heard God in the movie, and the way in which the movie showed each of us something about our own lives.  We’ll end the evening with a brief Night Prayer.

Please email Lynnsay Buehler at lbuehler@stbedes.org to let her know you are able to attend or write your name on the sign-up sheet on the round table in the Commons.

ART FROM THE HEART GALLERY

Great news! We have made arrangements for the installation of the picture railing in the Commons. This is the first step towards the creation of the Gallery space. The heavy rains of the past weeks resulted in some water damage and caused a delay in the process, but we are working on solutions and hope to soon be able to create a safe space to hang the pieces we will be including in our shows.

Many thanks to those who have volunteered their time to participate in this project! More opportunities for involvement will be available as we prepare the space and make arrangement for our first event. And if you have a chance, stop by the Tucker Library in the upcoming weeks. The Tucker Art Alliance is installing a show there and you will be able to see the wonderful work of many of the artists we hope will participate in Art From the Heart at St. Bede’s!

If you have any questions or know what you would like to volunteer to do, let me, Lois Shingler, know. (lshinglerpc@gmail.com or (404) 593-9001.

Lunch for Church of the Common Ground

On Sunday, October 27, 11 of us gathered in the Parish Hall to make 80 sack lunches for COTCG! Many, many thanks to these awesome volunteers who made lunches for the congregants of COTCG.

After attending our service at St. Bede’s, 6 of us along with Judah Sali and Beth Cannon, who brought 8 members of our youth group and a parent, attended the service at COTCG in Woodruff Park and then served lunch. Our youth did an outstanding job serving hot drinks before the service and then serving lunch. So very appreciative of their service. It was a true privilege and blessing for all of us who were able to participate in feeding our unhoused sisters and brothers of Atlanta!

See the bulletin board outside the Mission Wing for more photos of the day!

As we all watch the tragic events of violence escalate in Jerusalem and Palestine, it is so important to keep the people of the Holy Land in our prayers.

In addition to our prayers, St. Bede's has also transmitted a gift of $500 to Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) for relief efforts related to the travesties of this conflict. Sadly, one of ERD's strongest and longest-standing partners in the Diocese of Jerusalem is the Al Ahli Arab Hospital - the Anglican hospital in Gaza that was severely damaged by explosion and where hundreds of people were killed. Please keep relief workers on the ground in your prayers as they attempt to offer care and relief.

An Altar of Remembrance

This year, as we celebrate All Saints'/All Souls' Days, a tradition returns - an Altar of Remembrance. While many cultures celebrate some festival for the remembering all the faithful departed, we  embrace this tradition from Mexico where these tableaux are set out in homes, churches, and in other community gathering areas around the time of Día de los Muertos - the Day of the Dead (All Saints'/All Souls' Day).

St. Bede's parishioners from all worship services are invited to bring photos of loved ones who have died to place on the altar that will be set up in the Commons (photos may be framed or unframed, and name labels help us all join in the remembrance). Other items representing loved ones who have died may also be placed there - favorite foods, a small article of clothing, or anything that brings that person to mind. Photos and other items may be placed on the tables set up to the left of the entry doors to the Nave any time between Sunday, October 20 and Sunday, November 3. Items may be picked up any time after November 4.

You may wish to conclude this micro-practice with this prayer:

As we practice loving you, our neighbors, and ourselves,

may we embrace curiosity, remembering your love connects us all.

Amen.

McLemore's Musings

We hope you are enjoying this feature in St. Bede's E-News - McLemore's Musings. Many of you have met the Rev'd Bill McLemore who has joined the St. Bede's community. Bill has been a priest for over 57 years and has served parishes all over the Episcopal Church. Bill is the former archivist of the Diocese of Atlanta and authored the 100th anniversary book on the history of the Diocese. Bill is also an artist and has used his artistic skills and sense of humor for many years to draw hundreds of cartoon that comically comment on life in the Episcopal Church. Each week we will share a cartoon here that Bill selects from his collection. Enjoy!

Would you like to receive

a brief Morning Devotion each day?

I have been emailing them to about 100 Episcopalians from churches I have served across the country. Currently, there are five monthly themes: Baptismal Covenant, Gospel of John, Hymns, Paul’s Epistles, and the Psalms. They only take 3 to 5 minutes of your time and they are free to all who wish to receive them. If you would like to receive them, send your email address to me at:

The 36th Annual Homeless Requiem

The Cathedral of St. Philip

will host a holy evening

of remembrance and community

at the 36th Annual Homeless Requiem

on Friday, November 1, 2024.

The Requiem is a service in memory of individuals who have died in the past year while unhoused. Childcare will be provided throughout the event beginning at 4:30 p.m. Buses will pick up guests—Atlantans currently experiencing homelessness—at various shelters and Woodruff Park on November 1 between 4 and 5 p.m. and provide return transportation as well. Beginning at 4:30 p.m guests are welcome to visit with our service providers for healthcare screenings, a foot clinic, clothing closet, and more, then enjoy a warm, communal meal at 5 p.m.. At 6:15 p.m. guests can participate in the Choral Prelude in the Cathedral, followed by the Requiem Service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Ashley Carr will be preaching, and the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral, will be presiding.

There will be many opportunities to volunteer at and before the Requiem, including:

  • Welcoming and serving dinner to our guests: many of the adults and children living without housing in Metro Atlanta.
  • Joining in worship at the service itself, singing and praying with our neighbors from across the city
  • Helping with advance preparation for the Requiem, including distributing print materials, setting tables, preparing Blessing Bags, and organizing donations of shoes and clothing

In addition, we invite your financial contributions, which will help fund this cherished event and other outreach ministries of the Cathedral. If you wish to make a contribution of our guests' most requested items, you may do so by purchasing items from our Amazon wishlist. Thank you for your generosity!

Friend in Christ,

As violence escalates in Ukraine, over one million people have already fled the country — and the borders are flooded with many more people desperate to leave.

Almost all of them are women and children who have had to seek safety on their own, leaving their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons behind.

As this crisis continues to evolve, we are working with Anglican agencies and our other partners to provide humanitarian assistance, and urgently ask for your help.

Your emergency gift today will support our immediate response, providing cash, blankets, hygiene supplies and other needs as this crisis unfolds.

Our faith networks are currently on the ground in the border areas of Poland, Hungary and Romania, and we will continue to coordinate with them in order to help those who have been displaced. Specifically, our partner ACT Alliance is helping families on the Hungarian border, and our Anglican partners are mobilizing both an immediate and long-term response in Poland, Romania and Hungary.

Yours faithfully,

Robert W. Radtke
