The Florida Southern Railroad made its way to Arcadia in the mid-1880s, later became the Seaboard Coastline, running through downtown Arcadia, alongside the 1911 depot that is still standing. The tracks were taken up a century later, and the Highway 17 overpass (pictured here, erected in 1937) was demolished shortly thereafter because there was no need for it and it could be a liability. Passenger service to the depot was discontinued in 1971. This photo ran in the April 1, 1976 edition of The Arcadian newspaper.
