1 | Join the Conversation This Friday

Americans are exposed to up to 10,000 advertisements per day. With so many products and services vying for attention, the method of delivery is an important factor.

This Friday, April 29 at 11 a.m., join Edible’s Chip Bates and FDOC’s Samantha Lane for a discussion on the evolving consumer marketing space and ways brands are reaching consumers across digital, social, and traditional platforms.

Come prepared to share. Where would you like to see Florida Orange Juice advertised? What advertising tactic drives you to purchase?

The insights gleaned from this interactive event will help support 2022-23 planning efforts for Florida Orange Juice.

Details are available here.

2 | Keeping Florida OJ in Carts

Last week, FCC Chairman Johnson wrote about the ways rising inflation may impact sales of Florida OJ. The latest FDOC Nielsen retail sales report for the period ending March. 26 indicates sales of total OJ are down by 0.2 % compared to the pre-pandemic level of 2019.

A national trend. The Consumer Price Index notes inflation is up by 8.5% over the last 12 months, while the average price OJ is up 6.9% year over year.

Meanwhile, the Department’s eCommerce program continues to drive sales of Florida Orange Juice, reaching $54.3 million last week.

3 | A Look Ahead

Two FCC meetings remain on the schedule as the 2021-22 season winds down.

Join Commissioners in Bartow on May 18 at 9 a.m. for presentations 2022-23 budget, programs, and more.

The June FCC meeting will take place at Florida Citrus Mutual’s 2022 Florida Citrus Industry Annual Conference in Bonita Springs on June 15 at 9 a.m.

4 | It’s That Time Again

Development of the next iteration of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is officially underway. The U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) are seeking input on the scientific questions it has identified to help inform the development of the 2025-2030 DGAs.

The questions are based on criteria that include relevance, importance, the potential impact on federal programs, avoiding duplication, and research availability. This is the first step in a five-step process that will help determine the expertise needed on the DGA Advisory Committee that will be appointed to conduct the evidence review.

The proposed questions cover topics such as dietary patterns across life stages, specific dietary pattern components, and strategies related to diet quality and weight management.

The public has until May 16 to comment.

The FDOC is monitoring the process and working with its partners to provide input at appropriate times. The remaining steps in the process include the appointment of the Advisory Committee, review of the evidence by the Advisory Committee, development of the guidelines, and lastly, implementation of the guidelines. This process is expected to be completed by 2025.

Currently, 100% fruit juice, such as orange juice, counts as a fruit serving and is included as a part of a healthy dietary pattern.

More details on the 2020-25 DGAs can be found here along with information on the role the FDOC played.
