Verse of the Month

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another:

just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

February is a month known for love.

Jesus commands us to love one another just as he loves us. When our hearts are transformed by God's love for us we are able to freely love others in ways we never could have imagined, even loving our enemies, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let's find new ways to love one another this month.

Team Building and Planning for 2022

The Haiti Health Network team was able to meet together in Ohio for a few days to plan and strategize for the upcoming year. This is the first time this team has been together in person after weeks of online communication. Arriving in snowy Ohio from the sunny Caribbean was a bit of a shock to the system for Covsky Aimable, In-Country coordinator for the Haiti Health Network, and Evenel Osias, Biomedical Technician and owner of Haiti Biomedical Solutions a business initiative supported by the Dalton Foundation. We believe this team we will be able to move forward with our goals to improve and expand upon sustainability of medical operations, increase access to healthcare, improve quality of care available, connect people with the healthcare resources they need, expand on education and collaboration with the Haiti Health Network members and much more.

BioMedical Training

This month David Kuhajda, The Dalton Foundation's International Biomedical Coordinator, and Evenel, were able to attend two biomedical trainings. The first was a week long certification training on the GE AMX-IV+ x-ray machine. These specific machines are well suited for the Haitian climate. There are a number of these models in country already awaiting repair. We believe Evenel may be the first Biomedical Technician certified on these machines in Haiti.

The second training David and Evenel attended was a 3 day introduction to the basics of servicing the OEC 9600/9800 C-Arms.

When sending medical equipment overseas it's important to weigh the pros and cons of each device. We have specifically selected this model to be used in Haiti as we believe it is best suited for the environment in which it will be used. We are in the early stages of an exciting project in which we will strategically place these devices in facilities throughout the country beginning this year.

Collaboration and Education Development

Collaboration and Education through the Haiti Health Network has been growing and developing in recent months. We have been hosting General Healthcare Roundtable discussions twice monthly for some time now. At the beginning of this year we hosting inaugural meetings for two new working groups, branching off the general healthcare discussions, as we saw specific needs coming up regularly in the meetings. The first working group is an Administration and Operations focused group. Together we came up with a list of topics we would like to cover in more detail, and this month hosted our first Webinar led by this working group. The Salary Structure and Equity webinar was full of valuable information, and was attended by partners in 5 different countries. We look forward to next months, "Going Solar" webinar.

The second working group formed is an Advocacy specific group. Through the creation of this group we sent out a survey to measure the impact the currently instability in Haiti is having on healthcare services. We knew the impact would be substantial but to have aggregated data covering 8 of the 10 departments in Haiti, from organizations representing a population of 3.5 million people the measurable impact is staggering. Affordable Housing in Ohio

Screenshot _29_.png

Finding affordable housing is becoming a major problem for Ohioans. A recent report by the National Income Housing Coalition tracked how much a person would have to earn to afford Fair Market Rent in their community. Fair Market Rent is the metric that HUD uses to determine how much housing should cost in a given city. According to the report, rents increased by 7.5% since the beginning of 2022 which is about three times faster than normal.

In Columbus, a person would have to make almost $20-an-hour to afford a two bedroom home at $1,031 a month. However, the average renter in the city only makes $17 per hour (NBC News). As rent increases across the state, average salaries remain unchanged.

As we move into 2022, relink.org has made it a priority to add more affordable housing services to our database. We hope to connect as many families as possible to improve living situations across Ohio.

Three Cribs Donated

The Progeny Family Training Center located in central Ohio has been caring for medically fragile and chronically ill children for 30 years. Their support services seek to keep families intact by helping them manage care and by providing respite opportunities. In addition, they foster and adopt many children that don’t have family to care for them.

The Dalton Foundation is proud to support their valuable work and in January we were able to deliver 3 hospital grade cribs to their facility to allow room for more children. The Progeny team believes that children are our most valuable resource, and all children deserve the best care possible. We couldn’t agree more and are happy to play a small role to support.

Midwife Kits Delivered to 97 Facilities

Picture7.png

We shared in our January newsletter that we received 284 midwife kits from Direct Relief. These kits are full of essential items to support safe deliveries. Our team on the ground spent two weeks delivering these kits to 97 facilities all across northern Haiti. Those who received the kits were so grateful, knowing they are better equipped now at their birthing facilities and as midwives. These kits will support safer deliveries for 14,200 births.

We heard from a number of the medical directors and midwives receiving these kits. Here is what they had to say,

"The kits are really wonderful, and will be so helpful for us."

"We are so thankful for these kits. I want to thank those who made it possible for us to receive this Midwife Kit. I was shocked to see the contents when I opened the box. This will be very helpful for us."

"Thank you for thinking of those of us here in Haiti working in Healthcare. This kit will help us so much. Thank you."
