SU4C Winter News 2024

Greetings all & Happy New Year,

Sails Up 4 Cancer is grateful for all the support received in 2023 and wishes to thank our supporters and friends for making 2023 so successful.  Thanks to all our supporters and friends, we were able to donate close to $95,000 to cancer patients and cancer care hospitals.

All donations to cancer care hospitals were earmarked specifically toward patient needs. All donations to cancer patients were to assist them financially to meet their needs and obligations. By doing so we reduce the stress so many cancer patients experience during their battle with cancer.

I am proud to report that our Spinnaker Fund, which is purposely tailored to meet patient needs helped approximately one family per week in 2023. Just think about that. A family who can now pay their rent, buy medicine, keep the lights on, or do the simple task of buying food. We could not do it without the support of people like you and we thank you for your generosity.

Looking forward to 2024 we will kick off February with a fabulous Gala on the eve of World Cancer Day, February 3. The event is in support of our Spinnaker Fund. We hope to raise enough money to benefit two families per week in 2024. Doubling our results from 2023. With your help, we can meet that target.

June 14 & 15 are the dates for our Annual Regatta Weekend, so mark your calendars. Sailboat racing, Cornhole tournaments, great food, great music, auctions, and more. This is a cornerstone of the Sails Up 4 Cancer mission and has become one of the premier events celebrating the beginning of summer in Mystic.

Lastly, don’t forget to get your required cancer detection appointments. You know what they are. Eat healthy, exercise, don’t smoke, enjoy time with your friends, and be happy.

HOW TO OBSERVE

NATIONAL CANCER PREVENTION MONTH

Donate: Your donations can make a huge difference. They fund more research, help pay for treatment, and get the word out about cancer.

Go out and spread the word: Don’t just collect information. Spread the word and provide others with important information, prevention tips, and risk factors, among other things.

Cut the statistics: One-third of all cancers can be prevented. Take action by choosing healthy habits, like quitting smoking, consuming less alcohol, being active and at a healthy weight, limiting your exposure to radiation, and getting vaccinated.

WHY NATIONAL CANCER PREVENTION

MONTH IS IMPORTANT

1. Prevention is key. It reminds us to make healthy choices, pay attention to risk factors, and live a healthy lifestyle to lower our chances of getting the disease. The way we live has a big impact.

2. Keeps cancer as a trending topic. The day reminds us to keep up with the latest news, research, progress reports, and new developments about cancer. We are all affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly.

3. It reminds us to value ourselves. National Cancer Prevention Month reminds us that health is wealth, even when life is busy. To stay alive, we need to take care of our health.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world, killing nearly 10 million people each year and more than 600,000 in the U.S. alone. Cancer has been around since the beginning of time. Although little was understood about the human body at the time, the earliest evidence was written on papyri dating back to 1500 B.C., when tumors on the breast were discovered. Even though we haven’t found a cure for cancer yet, we’re closer than ever thanks to important steps forward.

Author Sandi Gold was told by five neurologists she had less than a year to live. Decades later, her oncologist insisted that she have a mastectomy. She declined and with no doctor’s help – just five months later – was cancer-free. Exactly how she accomplished this is explained in her new book, I Chose Love: How to Thrive After a Life-threatening Illness Using Love to Guide You.

Sandi is graciously donating a portion of her book proceeds to Sails Up 4 Cancer. Order your book!
