Democrats go beyond caring. They put their compassion into action and work to protect and preserve the environment, the rights of all minorities, the rights of women to their own bodies, and the rights of children to a good education, adequate food, and safe housing. We protect workers and our elderly and disabled, defend the right to fair treatment by the police and judicial systems regardless of race, and promote living wages and the right to universal health care. We uphold the precedence of science over ideology and defend the truth. We strive to ensure the dignity of the homeless and disenfranchised and to ensure the constitutional right of every eligible American to make their voice heard at the ballot box. We defend the basic human rights of refugees and immigrants, second chances for those who are starting over, and the right of every human being to love who they want to love.
Over the years, Democrats have enacted these values in legislation such as the Unemployment Compensation Act, the Social Security Act, Food Stamps, the School Lunch Program, the National Science Foundation, Medicare and Medicaid, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Affordable Care Act, the National Labor Relations Act, Workers Compensation Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Democrats led the way to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the Soil Conservation Service, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and much more. Today, we continue the fight to save our planet and ensure fair, just, and equitable opportunities for all Americans by electing leaders who embrace these values next year and beyond.
THIS IS WHO WE ARE.
Won’t you help us spread this message and support our work?

Registering voters in St. Johns County is one of the best things we can do to put our candidates in a position to win. Much ground was lost last year due to COVID, so we are rolling up our sleeves to make up for that and go well beyond! We've developed a strategic and targeted voter registration plan that we will follow from now until the mid-term election next year. We won't reveal the details of our targets, goals, or methods in this newsletter in case it falls into the wrong hands, but we need every Democrat to help support our energetic, sustained, and multi-method approach.
The first step is to get trained and certified (about an hour); then you will be provided a list of opportunities from which you can choose to register voters.
VOTER REGISTRATION TRAINING

JOHN LEWIS VOTERCADE: MAY 8th
|
|
The Late Congressman John Lewis shed his blood crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Fight for black voters and voters of color to participate in America’s electoral Process and the enactment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Today voting rights are under attack nationally by state legislators -- including Florida -- who are introducing and passing laws to put up barriers to our participation in elections. Americans are coming together to fight back. Join one of the more than 100 events across the nation on May 8 to demand the passage of the federal For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, D.C. statehood, and to address one of the greatest obstacles to the passage of civil and voting rights – and one of the last vestiges of slavery – the filibuster! Click here for more information.
A Votercade (motorcade) will be held in Jacksonville from 2-4 PM on May 8th. Click here for more information or to register for this event.

Democrats in St. Johns County have been working to beautify and increase the functionality of party headquarters! The renovation is part of our broader effort to build capacity as we gear up for election season, and ultimately, in-person meetings. The changes will result in greater efficiency and productivity, with the new layout facilitating multiple simultaneous activities. Check it out at our Open House on May 22nd!

FLORIDA'S VOTER SUPPRESSION BILL
|
|
Florida's voter suppression bill (SB 90) was passed by Senate and House Republicans this evening largely along party lines. The bill aims to suppress the vote by creating a multitude of restrictions related to how people can vote, especially constraints on voting by mail. It adds more identification requirements for those requesting to vote by mail, requires voters to request a mail ballot for each election, limits who can collect and drop off mail ballots, curtails the use of ballot drop boxes, and further empowers partisan observers during the ballot-counting process.
Why? After all, the Republican presidential nominee won the state in 2020. It's obvious that this legislation is nothing more than an attempt to ensure that Rubio and DeSantis win their re-elections next year: for the first time, more Democrats than Republicans voted by mail last year -- 600,000 more.
Expect lawsuits. In the meantime, we will not be deterred by these obvious efforts to disadvantage Florida's Democratic voters. Rest assured, we will double down and implement the most vigorous effort possible to get our voters to the polls, whether it be by mail ballot, early voting, or on election day. We will come together to make sure Democratic turnout exceeds all expectations in 2022 and results in the election of leaders who will protect our civil rights and act in the interests of the people. If you are with us, let us know by signing up to volunteer now!

In our first four months, the new DEC 2020-2024 launched a rigorous Voter Registration Initiative, added three new Democratic caucuses and clubs, organized 10 subcommittees, lobbied our state representatives, developed a campaign plan, passed an annual budget, embarked on a renovation of the headquarters, and elected two DEC officers to state and regional posts.
We invite you to become an active and engaged participant in the St. Johns County Democratic Party. You can be a Precinct Leader, serve on a subcommittee, volunteer to help register voters and encourage Democratic turnout, or provide administrative support. Currently, we're especially seeking volunteers to provide graphics design support, newsletter support, and support for event organizing. We can help you identify an opportunity that works best for your background and schedule.
Contact stjohnsdemocraticparty@gmail.com or volunteer@stjohnsdemocrats.org if you can help out in any of these capacities, or
