A Message from the Director

Hello from Seabeck!

I am full of optimism right now. I know that isn’t unusual, but these are strange and uncertain times we live in. Sometime over the weekend we will hit the midpoint of winter. I can already see Spring coming. Buster encouraged some migrating geese to find a new rest area yesterday. The days are getting noticeably longer.

There are bagpipers back on the campus today for the first time since 2020! It was so great to welcome back the Celtic Arts Foundation and their Winter School. They have been absent for two years. It felt like a reunion of old friends. Fred Morrison is back. Across the street, Turrie remembered his name, his wife’s name and his order. How amazing is that? It just goes to show you that the Seabeck magic isn’t limited to our side of the bridge.

We will host our annual Celtic Arts Concert on February 13th at 7:30pm in the Meeting House. No RSVP needed. The cost is just $10, and all proceeds go directly to the performers. It’s an awesome show and well worth seeing.

The local Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) have chosen the Seabeck Cemetery as their project to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday. They are organizing work parties, doing genealogical research on the people in the cemetery, applying for grants and many other things. They hope to get ground penetrating radar up there to finally identify where the graves are actually located. There should be opportunities for work parties to help them out. I can’t help but think how pleased Fred Just would be knowing that his sacred place is being cared for. He would have loved the radar technology. He used a steel rod and a hammer.

Kelly Charlton (see below) is doing a great job as our new Food Service Director. She has brought many new ideas with her and I think you will enjoy the changes to the menu. Change is always scary, but it is so fun to see new perspective and energy in the Seabeck Kitchen. Be sure and tell her “Hi” during your next visit.

We will be hosting two fun weekends in December. On December 8-10th we will host our Annual Friends of Seabeck Christmas Weekend in Pines. At that same time, we will host an Arts weekend where you can come and quilt, needlepoint, basket weave, etc. More details to follow as the year progresses but mark your calendars.

I hope you are planning to join us during the coming year. We are ready to host you and your group. We can’t wait to make this year the best yet.

Kelly Charlton

I am so excited to be part of the Seabeck Conference Center family. You probably want to know a little about me and my background so here we go…

I am originally from Southern California and moved to Bainbridge Island in 2007. My journey in hospitality began at the age of 15 and I haven’t stopped. I have held almost every position within a restaurant. I also happen to love food! I enjoy creating fun meals, I love eating and hosting dinners. I find the best conversations and time spent with one another happens around good food.

My vision for our guests is to provide that same experience I enjoy so much, here at Seabeck. When you hear the bell, no matter what meal of the day, you know you will be enjoying a good meal with friends, and family.

Outside of the Conference Center I spend my time with my family. I have three young children, two boys 5, 4 and a daughter who is 1. My husband and I enjoy exploring the PNW with them and watching new experiences through their eyes.

I look forward to meeting all the great people that make the Seabeck Conference Center such a special place.

Advertising at SeaTac

We have a large display ad in Terminal D at SeaTac airport. It was made possible by a grant from the Port of Seattle. We have already had a few people say that they saw it when they were at the airport.

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT

SEABECK CONFERENCE CENTER

Want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash.

Here are some creative ideas you might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations

easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests.

Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center

are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income

taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of

the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70 1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at (360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
